Chapter 1

The Blood on the Snow

The Black Ridge border was a jagged spine of frozen black granite and ancient pine that split the continent into two irreconcilable halves.

To the south lay the temperate, fertile valleys ruled by the Crimson Crest pack—a decadent, ruthless coalition of warlords commanded by Calder Graves, who governed through terror, slave collars, and blood tributes. To the north stretched the untamed, sub-zero wilderness of the Frostborn Lycans—a legendary race of colossal Arctic wolves who answered only to ancestral honor, the harsh laws of winter, and their sovereign Warlord, Erik Vane.

For three centuries, the borderlands had been a no-man's-land where only outcasts, exiles, and lone hunters dared to dwell.

Freja Lindqvist had lived in the shadow of the Black Ridge since she was thirteen years old. When her father, Torvald Lindqvist—the former High Sage of the southern territories—refused to sanction Calder Graves’s slaughter of the border clans, Calder had burned their ancestral hall and driven the family into the northern snows. Torvald had died three winters ago, leaving Freja with an isolated timber cabin, a yew longbow, and an ancient cedar chest filled with the leather-bound herbals of her mother’s Moon Priestess lineage.

Freja had survived not through pack protection, but through absolute self-reliance. She could track an elk through four feet of powder, brew an antidote for any venom that crept through the frozen bogs, and put an arrow through a wolf's eye at eighty yards in a blinding gale.

Her silver-white hair, cascading in a thick braid past her waist, was a constant danger. Among the southern packs, the pure white hair of the Moon Priests was believed to hold the secret of breaking ancestral territorial wards. Calder Graves had sent three hunting parties into the borderlands over the years to capture her, but Freja had always vanished into the mountain crags like a winter ghost.
