Chapter 2

A Pact with the Devil

The Price of Betrayal · Isla Montgomery · 6 min read

The black glass obelisk of Sterling Tower rose ninety stories into the rainy night, its pinnacle swallowed by the low autumn clouds. At nine-fifteen on a Tuesday evening, the marble lobby was deserted except for two armed private security guards stationed beside the executive elevator bank.

"I need to see Mr. Sterling," Vivienne said calmly, lowering the wet collar of her Burberry trench coat. Her emerald eyes were piercing, her auburn hair damp around the edges, framing a face that was pale, regal, and chillingly composed.

The senior guard glanced up, ready to dismiss an unannounced visitor, but the moment he recognized the heiress of Vance Media, his posture snapped to attention. "Mrs. Cross... Mr. Sterling is in a private conference on the ninetieth floor. He doesn't take unscheduled appointments."

"Tell him Vivienne Vance is in the lobby," she said, her voice dropping an octave, ringing with quiet authority. "Tell him I have the forensic audit for the North Atlantic shipping lines, and five minutes of his time will make him three hundred million dollars."

The guard swallowed hard, lifted a secure radio to his collar, and spoke in low murmurs. Twenty seconds later, the private executive elevator chimed, its polished chrome doors gliding open. "Penthouse suite, ma'am. Mr. Sterling is waiting."

The elevator rocketed upward in near-silence, sixty seconds of ear-popping acceleration. When the doors opened directly into the sprawling, dimly lit duplex penthouse, Vivienne stepped onto dark herringbone walnut floors. The space was colossal, minimalist, and suffocatingly masculine—black steel accents, massive modern canvases bathed in museum spotlights, and a three-story curved glass curtain wall overlooking the rain-soaked sprawl of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline.

At the far end of the room, standing beside a black marble bar with a tumbler of amber liquid in hand, was Sebastian Sterling.

He had removed his suit jacket, wearing a crisp charcoal dress shirt with the top two buttons undone, the cuffs rolled back to reveal muscular forearms corded with veins and a heavy Audemars Piguet chronograph. At thirty-two, he possessed an almost feral elegance—sharp, aristocratic cheekbones, a shadow of dark stubble along a chiseled jaw, and hair as black as midnight, touched with faint silver at the temples. But it was his eyes that commanded the room: dark, obsidian, and utterly merciless.

He set his tumbler on the marble counter and turned to face her, his gaze sweeping over her soaked trench coat, her flushed cheeks, and the fierce, electric fire burning behind her emerald eyes.

"Vivienne Vance," Sebastian said, his deep, baritone voice rolling through the quiet room like distant thunder. "To what do I owe the extraordinary pleasure of having the crown jewel of the Vance dynasty appear in my home unannounced on a Tuesday night?"

"Drop the polite society act, Sebastian," Vivienne said, walking toward him with steady, measured steps, her wet coat slipping from her shoulders and landing on an Italian leather chaise. Beneath it, she wore an emerald silk cocktail dress that hugged every curve of her waist and hips, the color accentuating the porcelain clarity of her skin. "I didn't come here to drink cocktails and make small talk."

Sebastian’s dark eyebrows rose slightly, a slow, dangerous smile curving the corner of his lips. "Clearly. You left your husband's name at the door, and you look like an angel who just set fire to heaven. What happened, Vivienne?"

Vivienne stopped three feet from him. The scent of him enveloped her—expensive cedarwood, bergamot, and the intoxicating, raw musk of pure masculine power. For a fraction of a second, the magnitude of what she had witnessed an hour ago threatened to crack her composure, but she forced her chin up, meeting his lethal gaze without flinching.

"Julian is sleeping with my stepsister Chloe," she said, her voice steady as a surgeon's scalpel. "They have been funneling Vance Media operational funds into an offshore shell company called Bayside Holdings in the Cayman Islands for eight months. Julian plans to default on the Cross Logistics syndicated loan next month, dump the toxic liabilities onto my family's balance sheet, and walk away with eighty million dollars to file for divorce."

Sebastian didn't blink. His expression remained unreadable, but a terrifying, predatory gleam flared in the depths of his dark eyes. "I know about Bayside Holdings. My analysts flagged the capital transfers two weeks ago. I was preparing to initiate a hostile takeover of Cross Logistics on Monday and crush Julian under four hundred million in leveraged debt."

He paused, stepping closer until only a single breath of space separated them. He towered over her, his immense physical presence radiating heat and unyielding dominance.

"The only reason I hesitated, Vivienne," Sebastian murmured, his voice dropping to a low, intimate rasp that sent a jolt of electricity straight to her core, "was because you were attached to him. And I had no interest in destroying you in the crossfire."

Vivienne felt her breath hitch. "You don't have to hold back anymore. I want you to destroy him, Sebastian. I want you to take every ship, every warehouse, every dollar, and every shred of dignity he possesses. I have the master admin credentials to Vance Media's central banking ledger, and I know the exact transaction routes Julian used. We can trigger an emergency margin call on his debt notes right during his high-society anniversary presentation on Thursday."

Sebastian studied her face, his obsidian eyes drinking in the fierce defiance in her features. Slowly, he reached out, the tips of his warm, calloused fingers brushing against the soft curve of her jaw, tilting her face upward. His touch sent a violent, illicit tremor racing across her skin.

"Revenge is an expensive game, Vivienne," he whispered, his thumb lightly grazing the fullness of her bottom lip. "You want me to deploy five hundred million in liquidity to buy up Julian's debt notes and call them due forty-eight hours from now. That’s easy for me. But what do I get in return?"

"You get Vance Media's prime maritime advertising contracts, forty percent equity in the logistics restructuring, and Julian Cross on his knees begging for scraps," she replied, her pulse hammering wildly against his fingers.

Sebastian chuckled darkly, a sound that vibrated deep in his broad chest. He leaned down until his lips were a fraction of an inch from her ear, his warm breath raising goosebumps along the sensitive skin of her neck.

"I don't give a damn about maritime advertising contracts, sweetheart. I have enough money to buy half of Manhattan twice over."

Vivienne shivered, her hands resting against his hard chest to steady herself. "Then what do you want?"

Sebastian's fingers slid down her throat, settling over the rapid, erratic beat of her pulse, his dark eyes locking onto hers with terrifying, possessive intensity.

"You, Vivienne. I want you. In my bed, in my life, by my side at every boardroom table, wearing my ring and carrying my name. Julian had a goddess and treated her like a transaction. If I tear him down for you, you belong to me—body, mind, and soul. Do we have a deal?"

Sebastian took a step closer, the dark intensity of his presence drowning out the city lights behind him. The air between them was charged with an ancient, dangerous hunger that made Vivienne's blood run hot.

"Julian thought he could outsmart me with forged shipping certificates three years ago," Sebastian continued in a low, gravelly timbre that vibrated right through her ribs. "He was a small-time thief who got lucky marrying a queen. But he didn't value what he had. He wanted to play in the big leagues with counterfeit chips."

He gently lifted a stray auburn curl that had fallen across her cheek, tucking it behind her ear with lingering, deliberate slowness. His fingertips brushed against the sensitive pulse point at the base of her throat, feeling the frantic, hammering rhythm of her heart.

"You came to the right place, Vivienne," Sebastian whispered, his dark eyes locking onto hers with unshakeable conviction. "I don't just destroy my enemies. I salt the earth where they stood. And for you, I will make his destruction an art form."
