The Price of Betrayal

The rain lashed violently against the tinted panoramic windows of the black Town Car as Vivienne Vance checked the diamond Cartier watch encircling her slender wrist. Eight forty-five on a Tuesday evening in late October. In the seat beside her lay a leather-bound portfolio containing the signed deed to the vineyard in Bordeaux she had spent six agonizing months negotiating as an anniversary gift for her husband, Julian Cross.

Tonight marked exactly two years since they had exchanged vows at St. Patrick's Cathedral before five hundred elite members of New York high society. For two years, Vivienne had poured her pedigree, her inheritance, and her sharp financial acumen into rebuilding Cross Logistics, lifting Julian from an insecure mid-tier shipping executive into a boardroom power player. She had believed in his boyish charm, his whispered promises in the dark, and his declarations of devotion.

She swiped her black keycard at the private elevator bank of their Upper East Side duplex penthouse. The elevator chimed softly, ascending sixty floors above the glittering Manhattan skyline. When the brass doors parted, Vivienne stepped into the marble foyer, shaking the raindrops from her designer umbrella.

The penthouse was strangely quiet, yet not dark. A trail of discarded garments littered the polished white Calacatta marble hallway like breadcrumbs of a sordid crime. First, a crimson silk tie—one she had purchased for Julian in Milan. Next, a pair of glittering Louboutin stilettos that Vivienne recognized with an icy jolt of nausea. Those shoes did not belong to her; they belonged to Chloe, her twenty-three-year-old stepsister whom Vivienne had sheltered, financed, and appointed as junior director of public relations at Vance Media.

Vivienne's breath hitched in her throat, a cold, suffocating weight pressing down on her chest. Her instincts urged her to turn around, to pretend she had seen nothing, to protect herself from the inevitable devastation. But Vivienne was a Vance. Her grandfather had built a transatlantic communications dynasty out of grit, steel, and unyielding will. She did not flinch from the truth, no matter how bloodied it left her.

Quietly, her soft leather heels making no sound against the Persian runner, Vivienne stepped toward the master suite. The heavy double mahogany doors were cracked open four inches. A warm, musky scent of sweat, expensive French perfume, and champagne wafted into the corridor, accompanied by the wet, rhythmic slap of bare skin and breathless, wanton whimpers.
