Chapter 2
Rescued by the Devil

The freezing asphalt bit into Avery's skin, but the bitter cold was rapidly giving way to a dangerous, numbing peace. Her eyelashes were heavy with icy rain, her fingers stiff and bloodless against the wet concrete. Through the gray curtain of the storm, she saw the dark figure approaching with terrifying, fluid speed.
Alexander Sterling.
Even through the fog of delirium and encroaching shock, Avery recognized the man who commanded the fears and fortunes of every boardroom from Manhattan to Zurich. Standing six-foot-four in a bespoke charcoal wool coat, Alexander moved like an apex predator of the modern financial world. He possessed sharp, Mediterranean cheekbones, a severe, aristocratic jawline shadowed by dark stubble, and eyes the color of polished obsidian that could strip a rival CEO's confidence to ribbons in three seconds flat.
He was Wall Street’s undisputed king of darkness—a multi-billionaire whose venture empire, Sterling Global, had swallowed international conglomerates whole. He was famous throughout high society for his icy ruthlessness, his complete refusal to indulge in frivolous socialite games, and his utter contempt for the old-money dynasties of New York.
Before Avery’s cheek could strike the filthy, rain-slicked curb, Alexander dropped to both knees in the freezing puddle without the slightest regard for his bespoke trousers.
His massive, powerful arms slipped beneath her shivering frame, lifting her effortlessly against his broad, muscular chest. The sheer, overwhelming heat radiating from his body hit her like a roaring furnace, a staggering contrast to the sub-zero rain that had nearly stopped her heart.
"Avery!" Alexander’s voice cut through the howling gale—a deep, gravelly baritone that trembled with an intensity of terror she had never imagined the titan capable of feeling. "Avery, look at me! Stay with me, damn you! Keep your eyes open!"
Avery tried to speak, but only a faint, trembling whimper escaped her blue, parted lips. Her head rolled back helplessly against his shoulder, her cheek resting over the heavy, furious drumming of his heart beneath wet cashmere and silk.
Alexander didn't hesitate. He pulled her flush against his chest, wrapping the thick folds of his dry coat around her soaked body like an impenetrable fortress, and surged to his feet in one explosive movement. He carried her to the idling Maybach, ducking into the rear passenger cabin.
"Get us to the penthouse!" Alexander roared to his chauffeur, slamming the heavy armored door shut. His voice carried the thunderous authority of an emperor under siege. "Tell Dr. Mercer to have an emergency hypothermia resuscitation unit waiting in the master suite! Now, Marcus! Move!"
The armored Maybach surged forward with a ferocious roar of acceleration, tires biting into the wet asphalt as it tore through the red lights and rain-drenched avenues of Manhattan.
Inside the quiet, leather-lined cabin, Alexander pulled Avery onto his lap, his large, scarred hands rubbing her frozen arms and hands with desperate, frantic urgency. He stripped off her soaked cashmere coat, throwing it to the floorboards, and wrapped a thick shearling blanket around her shivering shoulders.
"Who did this to you, Avery?" Alexander rasped, his face inches from hers, his dark eyes ablaze with homicidal fury. "Who put their hands on you? Tell me!"
Avery looked up through the haze of her exhaustion into his piercing obsidian eyes. For five years, since they had first crossed paths during an international trade summit in Geneva, Alexander Sterling had been an intimidating, unapproachable titan on the periphery of her life. She had never understood why his gaze always tracked her across crowded charity galas, or why his firms had mysteriously declined to back Julian’s predatory corporate takeovers. Now, held in his crushing, possessive embrace, the truth began to pierce through the cold fog of her mind.
"Julian..." Avery whispered, her teeth chattering so violently she could barely form the syllables. "Chloe... took my mother's ring... tore it from my hand... threw me into the street..."
A muscle ticked violently in Alexander’s jaw. His knuckles whitened as he held her against his chest, his large hand gently coming up to cup the side of her freezing neck, feeling for the faint, fluttering pulse beneath her skin. A terrifying, lethal calm settled over his features—a cold, calculating darkness that promised absolute annihilation to anyone who had dared cause her pain.
"They will pay for every single drop of rain that touched your skin tonight, Avery," Alexander whispered against her wet hair, his deep baritone vibrating with a sacred, unyielding vow. "I will strip Julian Croft of every dollar, every building, and every breath of pride he possesses. I swear it on my soul."
He pressed the intercom button to the front partition. "Marcus."
"Yes, Mr. Sterling?" the former SAS operative turned head of security answered instantly.
"Put Croft Enterprises under Tier-One financial surveillance. Tap Julian Croft’s personal phone lines, monitor his offshore accounts in Grand Cayman, and place two operatives outside the Park Avenue penthouse. If Julian or that little snake Chloe tries to leave the city, notify me immediately."
"Understood, sir. It will be done within twenty minutes."
The Maybach swung into the private subterranean garage of the Sterling Tower on Fifth Avenue, ascending seventy floors in the private hydraulic car lift directly into the triplex penthouse.
When the elevator doors parted with a soft pneumatic hiss, Alexander carried her across the vast herringbone walnut floors of the master suite. A private medical team led by Dr. Mercer, Sterling’s personal physician, was already waiting with warm saline IVs, thermal blankets, and cardiac monitors.
For the next two hours, Alexander refused to leave the room. He stood by the foot of the massive California king bed, his dress shirt unbuttoned at the throat, his dark hair disheveled, watching with hawk-like vigilance as the doctors stabilized Avery’s core temperature, administered warm fluids, and cleaned and bandaged the bleeding cut on her ring finger where Julian had ripped her mother's sapphire away.
By three o'clock in the morning, the feverish trembling had finally stopped. Avery lay beneath layers of goose-down duvets, her breathing steady and deep, her porcelain cheeks returning to a soft, healthy rose.
Dr. Mercer packed his medical kit, turning to Alexander with a respectful nod. "The hypothermia has been arrested, Mr. Sterling. Her vitals are stable, and there is no permanent tissue damage. She needs rest, warmth, and high-protein nutrition. She was fortunate you reached her when you did. Ten more minutes in that freezing rain, and her heart would have failed."
Alexander’s jaw tightened. "Thank you, Mercer. Keep your team on standby in the guest wing."
"Of course, sir."
When the doctors and nurses departed, the vast master suite fell into a profound, reverent silence, broken only by the crackle of the gas fireplace and the muted hum of the city far below.
Alexander walked over to the bed, pulling up a heavy leather armchair. He sat down, his large, warm hand reaching out to gently clasp Avery’s small, bandaged fingers, resting them against his stubbled cheek.
"You're safe now, my fierce girl," Alexander whispered into the dark room, his lips brushing her knuckles with a tenderness that defied every rumor of his cruelty. "Your nightmare is over. And tomorrow... our war begins."
While Dr. Mercer was examining Avery's vital signs, Alexander stepped out onto the marble terrace adjoining the master suite, where Marcus was already coordinating with the technical intelligence unit.
"Mr. Sterling," Marcus reported in a hushed, disciplined tone, "we've obtained the encrypted logs from Julian Croft's private server. It confirms what Mrs. Vance said. For the past six months, Croft has been funneling joint assets into an off-book account registered under Chloe Vance's name in the Bahamas. Furthermore, Julian has been boasting to his fraternity associates that he intended to abandon Avery penniless once the Hudson Logistics deal closed."
Alexander’s fists clenched, his knuckles popping in the cold night air. His dark eyes burned with an icy, murderous light. "Ensure every transaction is forensically documented, Marcus. I want a copy delivered to the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, but not yet. Let Julian believe he is succeeding. Let him inflate his own pride until the fall breaks every bone in his body."
"And the Vance girl?" Marcus inquired.
"Chloe Vance took an heirloom sapphire that belonged to Avery's mother," Alexander said, his voice dropping into a deadly, guttural rumble. "Have our luxury retail division monitor every high-end pawn shop, jeweler, and auction house in the tri-state area. If she attempts to sell or appraise that ring, seize the paperwork immediately. No one hurts Avery and escapes unharmed. Not in my city."
Marcus nodded respectfully. "Understood, sir. The perimeter around Croft's penthouse is sealed. They won't make a move without us knowing."
Alexander returned to the bedroom, dismissing the medical team with a quiet gesture. Sitting beside the bed, he watched the slow, steady rise and fall of Avery's chest. For years, he had watched her from afar, admiring her quiet resilience while cursing the fate that had bound her to an undeserving fool. Now that fate had delivered her to his doorstep, he would protect her with every resource at his command.
