The Devil's Proposition

The private conservatory on the seventy-first floor of the Sterling Tower was a breathtaking glass atrium filled with exotic orchids, fragrant lemon trees, and sleek minimalist furniture overlooking the sun-drenched Manhattan skyline.
Avery sat across from Alexander at a circular white marble table, dressed in a bespoke ivory silk blouse and tailored charcoal trousers that the penthouse stylist had delivered an hour earlier. Her raven hair fell in sleek, glossy waves over her shoulders, and her posture was straight, elegant, and regal.
A lavish breakfast spread of smoked salmon, poached eggs with hollandaise, fresh brioche, and espresso was laid out before them, but neither of them touched the food. Their attention was entirely locked on each other and the thick, leather-bound portfolio Alexander had placed between them.
"Before we discuss Croft Enterprises," Alexander began, his deep baritone cutting through the quiet conservatory, "we need to settle your immediate legal and personal position. Julian’s lawyers will file for divorce within forty-eight hours to claim the preemptive legal advantage. They will attempt to enforce the prenuptial agreement and paint you as an abandoned, penniless dependent to avoid public embarrassment."
Avery arched an elegant dark brow, leaning back against the plush velvet armchair. "Let them file. My prenuptial agreement with Julian Croft states that neither party can claim alimony if infidelity or moral turpitude is proven. I have already secured the digital security footage from the penthouse lobby showing Chloe entering the apartment at ten that night, and the hallway cameras captured the audio of Julian admitting to embezzling trust funds."
Alexander’s eyes flashed with fierce approval. "Good. You’re already thinking three moves ahead. But legal battles in New York family court take months, Avery. Julian’s father, Richard Croft, is deeply entrenched in the political machinery of the city. He will use his connections with judges to freeze your accounts and bury you in procedural motions."
"I am aware of Richard Croft’s influence," Avery said coldly. "He built Croft Enterprises on corrupt municipal contracts and kickbacks. What are you suggesting, Alexander?"
Alexander leaned forward, resting his forearms on the marble table. The sheer physical presence of the man was overwhelming—broad-shouldered, commanding, radiating a dangerous masculine power that demanded absolute attention.
"I am proposing an alliance, Avery. A public, unassailable partnership that will paralyze the Croft family before they can even file their first legal motion."
"What kind of partnership?"
Alexander opened the portfolio, revealing a single-page document bearing the gold-embossed seal of Sterling Global.
"A marriage of convenience," Alexander said, his voice dropping into a low, hypnotic cadence. "We announce our engagement tomorrow night at the Winter Metropolitan Gala. The moment you walk into that ballroom on my arm, Julian Croft becomes a national laughingstock. His creditors will panic, his board of directors will question his sanity for abandoning a woman backed by Sterling Global, and his father will not dare touch you through the courts without risking total war with my empire."
Avery’s heart skipped a beat, a sudden surge of heat blooming beneath her collarbone. She looked from the document to his dark, unyielding eyes.
"A marriage?" Avery whispered, her mind racing. "Alexander, I escaped one fraudulent marriage twelve hours ago. Why would you want to tie yourself to me? What do you gain from this?"
Alexander didn't blink. His gaze remained locked on hers, intense, possessive, and unapologetic.
"I gain the only woman on this planet whose intellect matches my own," Alexander said softly, his voice thick with an honesty that stole her breath away. "Sterling Global has been preparing a hostile takeover of Croft Enterprises' logistics and shipping network for six months. With your Delacroix capital buying up their European debt and my market power executing the squeeze on Wall Street, we will dismantle Richard and Julian Croft in thirty days. We split the assets fifty-fifty."
Avery studied him carefully, looking for any sign of deceit, but finding only unyielding determination and a simmering heat that made the hair on her arms stand on end.
"And what are the terms of this arrangement?" Avery asked, maintaining her cool, analytical composure. "What happens behind closed doors?"
Alexander leaned across the table, his hand reaching out to touch hers. His long fingers gently wrapped around her wrist, his thumb brushing over the rapid pulse beating beneath her skin. The touch was scorching, sending a shiver of raw desire straight down her spine.
"Under the public eye, you are my fiancée and the future queen of Sterling Global," Alexander murmured, his voice husky and dark. "You will live here, in this penthouse, where my security team can guarantee your absolute safety. Behind closed doors... I will never force you, Avery. I will wait until you come to me willingly. But do not deceive yourself into thinking this is purely business for me. I have wanted you for five years, Avery Delacroix. And I intend to win your heart."
Avery’s breath hitched in her throat. The sheer boldness of his declaration, combined with the magnetic pull between them, left her reeling. Julian had never looked at her with this kind of ferocious, unyielding passion; Julian had only looked at her as a trophy to be neglected.
She pulled her hand back gently, though her eyes never left his.
"I have two conditions, Alexander," she said, her voice firm and resolute.
"Name them."
"First, Julian and Chloe are mine to destroy. You provide the financial artillery, but I pull the trigger. I want Chloe to return my mother’s ring on her knees, and I want Julian to watch his father's empire crumble because of his own greed."
Alexander’s lips curved into a dark, predatory smile. "Granted. Nothing would give me greater pleasure than watching you execute them. And your second condition?"
"When this war is over, if either of us wishes to walk away, the contract dissolves without dispute."
Alexander stood up, towering over the table. He rounded the marble surface, stopping beside her chair. He reached down, offering his hand to help her stand.
When Avery took his hand, Alexander didn't shake it. He raised her knuckles to his lips, his warm breath fanning against her skin as he pressed a slow, deliberate kiss to the back of her hand, right beside the bandage on her ring finger.
"Agreed," Alexander whispered, his eyes blazing with an intoxicating mixture of danger and devotion. "Welcome to the empire, Avery. Let's go tear the Crofts apart."
Alexander stood up and walked to the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, looking out over the concrete spires of Wall Street.
"Croft Enterprises' supply chain has three critical vulnerabilities," Alexander explained, turning back to face her. "First, their primary shipping contracts with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey are up for annual renewal on Friday. Second, their revolving credit facility with Citibank is contingent upon Croft maintaining a three-to-one liquidity ratio. If Delacroix Capital freezes their European bond lines, Citibank will issue a margin call within twenty-four hours."
Avery nodded in complete agreement. "And third is their commercial paper program. Julian has been issuing ninety-day short-term notes to pay off existing creditors. It’s a classic Ponzi-style corporate liquidity spiral. All we need to do is restrict their access to secondary credit markets, and Croft Enterprises suffocates on its own cash burn."
Alexander’s eyes flashed with fierce admiration. "You understand corporate warfare better than half the hedge fund managers on Park Avenue. That’s why this alliance will be invincible. Wall Street has been waiting for someone to clean out Richard Croft's corrupt empire. Together, we won't just defeat them—we will absorb their entire shipping network into Sterling Global, creating the largest logistics monopoly in the Americas."
Avery stood up, walking toward him until she was standing just inches from his imposing frame. She looked up into his intense, dark eyes. "You're taking a risk, Alexander. Siding with a woman in the middle of a scandalous divorce could cause short-term turbulence for Sterling Global's stock price."
Alexander stepped closer, his hand reaching out to gently cup the side of her neck, his thumb tracing the soft curve of her jawline. The heat of his skin sent a shiver of electric warmth rippling down her spine.
"Let the stock price drop two points," Alexander murmured, his voice deep and husky. "The market will recover in forty-eight hours. But having you by my side, Avery... that is an investment worth ten billion dollars. I have spent five years waiting for this moment. I am not letting you go."
