Chapter 5

A Clean Break

The Reborn Heiress's Vengeful Reign · Sophia Reign · 6 min read

At ten o'clock that morning, the double elevator doors of the Croft Park Avenue penthouse parted to reveal an intimidating, impeccably dressed party.

Avery Vance walked at the center, radiating cold, untouchable majesty. She wore a tailored black wool trench coat over a bespoke midnight-navy silk dress, high patent-leather heels, and dark designer sunglasses. Flanking her on the left was Lucas Hale, the most feared corporate litigator in New York, carrying an embossed leather briefcase. Flanking her on the right was Marcus, Alexander Sterling's six-foot-three head of security, accompanied by two stone-faced private operatives.

The penthouse was filled with the aroma of freshly brewed espresso and buttery pastries. Julian Croft sat at the expansive marble dining island, wearing an expensive silk robe, casually scrolling through his tablet while Chloe Vance, wearing one of Avery’s monogrammed silk robes, poured champagne into two crystal flutes.

The heirloom sapphire ring glinted prominently on Chloe's left hand.

When the heavy front doors were opened with Avery’s personal master key, Julian jerked his head up, his scowl deepening instantly.

"What the hell is this?" Julian barked, setting his coffee mug down with a clatter. "Avery? I told you last night that you are persona non grata in this building! How dare you bring your pathetic friends into my home!"

Chloe turned around, a smirk of condescending triumph playing across her heavily painted lips. "Oh, look Julian, the stray dog came back for her scraps. Did you sleep on a park bench last night, Avery? You look surprisingly decent for a homeless divorcee."

Avery didn't even blink. She took off her sunglasses, handing them to Marcus, and stepped into the dining area. Her violet-blue eyes were as cold and unforgiving as arctic glaciers.

"This penthouse was purchased with funds from our joint account, Julian," Avery said, her voice clear, calm, and resonant. "Until a judge signs a final decree of dissolution, my name is on the deed, and I have every legal right to enter."

"You have no rights here, you little parasite!" Julian yelled, rising from his chair, his face reddening with fury as he noticed the two massive security operatives standing behind her. "Get out before I call the building superintendent and have you thrown out in handcuffs!"

"I wouldn't advise making that call, Mr. Croft," Lucas Hale spoke up, stepping forward with an icy, professional smile. He snapped open his briefcase, extracting a thick stack of blue-backed legal documents and slamming them onto the marble counter between Julian's plate and coffee cup.

Julian glared at the attorney. "Who the hell are you?"

"My name is Lucas Hale, senior managing partner of Hale, Hastings & Sterling," the attorney introduced himself, watching Julian’s eyes widen in sudden, unmistakable panic. Hale, Hastings & Sterling was the legal arm of Alexander Sterling’s empire—a firm that represented sovereign nations and Fortune 50 mega-corporations. They did not handle trivial Upper East Side marital disputes.

"H-Hale?" Julian stammered, glancing between the attorney and Avery. "Why is Sterling’s legal counsel representing my wife?"

"Mrs. Vance is our exclusive client," Lucas said crisply. "These documents constitute a formal Petition for Dissolution of Marriage on grounds of adultery, fraud, and physical battery. Attached is an emergency injunction freezing all joint accounts, credit lines, and corporate guarantees associated with Croft Enterprises and Croft Holdings LLC."

Chloe’s smirk vanished, replaced by an expression of shrill outrage. "You can't freeze Julian's accounts! He's the executive vice president of Croft Enterprises! Who do you think you are?"

"Be quiet, Chloe," Avery commanded, her voice slicing through the room like a silver scalpel.

Chloe bristled, holding up her left hand to flaunt the sapphire ring in Avery's face. "You don't get to talk to me like that anymore, Avery! Julian loves me now! He gave me your mother’s ring, and there’s nothing you can do about it!"

Avery stepped directly into Chloe's personal space. Standing taller in her heels, her aura of supreme authority made Chloe instinctively shrink back against the marble island.

"Enjoy that ring while you can, Chloe," Avery whispered, her voice deadly soft. "Because every stone in that setting is going to cost you a pound of flesh. That ring does not belong to you, and before this month is over, you will beg me on your knees to take it back."

"You crazy bitch!" Chloe shrieked, raising her hand to slap Avery.

Before Chloe’s hand could travel two inches, Marcus’s iron grip clamped around her wrist with crushing force, stopping her dead in her tracks. Chloe gasped in pain, tears of shock springing to her eyes.

"Do not attempt physical contact with Mrs. Vance," Marcus warned in a low, gravelly monotone that promised lethal violence.

"Let go of her!" Julian lunged forward, his fists raised, attempting to shove Marcus aside.

Marcus didn't even shift his footing. With a single, fluid motion of his free arm, he shoved Julian backward. Julian lost his footing on the polished marble floor and crashed heavily into the dining chairs, knocking over a crystal decanter of vintage wine that shattered across the rug, soaking the hem of his silk robe in deep scarlet.

"Julian Croft," Lucas Hale announced, looking down at the disgraced heir with utter contempt. "You have exactly forty-eight hours to vacate this premises. Mrs. Vance has exercised her right of sole occupancy pending trial. If you or Miss Vance attempt to remove any artwork, furniture, or heirloom jewelry from this property, criminal charges for grand larceny will be filed with the Manhattan District Attorney's Office by two o'clock this afternoon."

Julian scrambled to his feet, trembling with humiliation and rage, his chest heaving as he wiped wine from his sleeve.

"This is ridiculous!" Julian spat, glaring at Avery with venom. "Where are you getting the money for this, Avery? Who is backing you? You were nothing before you met me!"

Avery looked at him, her expression completely devoid of pity, regret, or warmth.

"You were so busy looking down on me, Julian, that you never bothered to ask where I came from," Avery said coldly. "Pack your bags. And prepare yourself. Because tomorrow night at the Winter Metropolitan Gala... the world will see exactly what you threw away."

Before anyone could move, the penthouse front door opened, and Julian's mother, Victoria Croft, walked in, wearing an expensive mink coat and diamond earrings.

"Julian, darling! What on earth is all this commotion?" Victoria began, before her eyes landed on Avery. Her haughty expression instantly morphed into sneering disgust. "You? What is this little beggar doing in my son’s penthouse? Julian, call the doorman immediately and have this girl escorted to the service elevator!"

"Mother, shut up!" Julian snapped in a hoarse, panic-stricken voice, clutching the legal documents with trembling hands. "She... she brought Lucas Hale. Alexander Sterling’s personal lawyer."

Victoria froze, her jaw dropping in shock. "Lucas Hale? Don't be absurd! Why would Alexander Sterling's attorney represent a nobody like Avery?"

"Because Mrs. Avery Delacroix Vance is our primary client, Mrs. Croft," Lucas Hale replied coldly, handing Victoria a certified court order. "And as of nine-thirty this morning, this property is subject to an emergency judicial injunction. Furthermore, Mrs. Croft, your personal trust distributions from Croft Holdings have been suspended pending the forensic audit into Julian's offshore embezzlement."

Victoria clutched her pearl necklace, gasping for breath as if she had been slapped across the face. "Embezzlement?! Julian, what have you done?!"

Chloe rushed over, clutching Victoria’s arm, whining in terror. "Victoria! Julian! Don't let her do this! Look at the ring Julian gave me! It's mine!"

Avery walked slowly toward Chloe, her gaze pinning the younger woman like an insect on a specimen board.

"Keep the ring for now, Chloe," Avery whispered in an icy, dangerous tone that made Victoria and Chloe shrink back in terror. "Enjoy the feeling of gold on your skin while you still have a roof over your head. Because when my auditors finish with Julian’s accounts, you won't even be able to afford the bus fare back to your mother in Palm Beach."

Julian lunged forward again, his eyes bloodshot with rage. "You bitch! I'll kill you! I'll ruin you!"

Marcus stepped forward, his massive frame blocking Julian with immovable authority. Marcus placed a single hand against Julian's chest, shoving the younger man back into the dining table with effortless power.

"Step back, Mr. Croft," Marcus warned, his voice low and menacing. "One more threatening gesture toward Mrs. Vance, and my operatives will break your arms before the police arrive. You have forty-eight hours to vacate. Pack your bags."

Avery gave them one last dismissive glance, turning on her heel and leading her entourage out into the elevator lobby, leaving the Croft family screaming at each other in hysterical terror.
