Chapter 3
The Blood Compact
Undercover with the Sicilian Don · Elena Vance & Dante King · 8 min read
The deafening crack of high-caliber sniper fire reverberated through the shattered penthouse, followed by the metallic percussion of automated alarm sirens howling across the entire Port of Palermo.
*BEEEEP! BEEEEP! CODE BLACK - EXECUTIVE BREACH!*
Shards of heavy safety glass showered across the polished basalt floor, sparkling like diamonds in the flashing emergency strobe lights.
Beneath the heavy mahogany desk, Dante held Lucia pinned securely against his chest, his broad shoulders shielding her from incoming ricochets. Lucia could feel the rapid, powerful thud of his heart through his silk shirt, the iron band of his forearm locked around her waist, and the intoxicating heat of his body pressing against hers.
"Stay down," Dante commanded, his voice deadly calm, devoid of panic.
With his free hand, Dante reached beneath the underside of the desk and unlatched a concealed biometric holster, withdrawing a customized SIG Sauer P226 pistol. He tapped the radio earpiece fitted into his left ear:
"Lorenzo. Southern perimeter roof. Two snipers on the crane gantries, thermal optics. Take them out now."
Through the earpiece, the sharp, gravelly voice of his chief caporegime, Lorenzo Cassano, crackled: *"Subito, Don Dante. Squad two is already ascending the gantry."*
Seconds later, muffled suppressed gunfire echoed from the crane towers outside. The red laser sights dancing across the office floor vanished, replaced by the thud of bodies hitting the container decks below.
Dante rolled smoothly to his feet, keeping his body between Lucia and the shattered window. He extended a large, strong hand down toward her.
"Are you hit?" Dante demanded, his slate-grey eyes scanning her body with fierce, possessive thoroughness.
Lucia took a ragged breath, accepting his hand as he pulled her effortlessly to her feet. Her knees were trembling from the adrenaline surge, but she forced her spine straight, brushing glass dust from her trench coat.
"I am fine," Lucia replied, her voice remarkably steady despite the chaos. "They were using 7.62 armor-piercing rounds. Greco’s men?"
"Greco’s elite vanguard," Dante confirmed grimly, holstering his weapon. "Which means Valli has already received confirmation that you accessed my private files. Within two hours, corrupt police units will surround this terminal with an arrest warrant for you—or worse, a body bag."
Lucia looked at the shattered glass, then down at the encrypted journal of her father resting safely inside Dante's jacket. The web of corruption was larger, darker, and more lethal than she had ever imagined. She was trapped in Palermo, hunted by both the mafia and the state.
"What do I do?" Lucia asked, looking up into Dante's imposing gaze.
Dante stepped closer, closing the distance between them until Lucia had to tilt her head back to meet his eyes. His gaze was dark, hypnotic, and filled with an intensity of sovereign power that made her breath hitch.
"You have two choices, Lucia," Dante said in a low, gravelly rumble that vibrated with raw authority. "Choice one: I can give you a fake passport and put you on a cargo freighter to South America tonight. You will spend the rest of your life in hiding, looking over your shoulder, waiting for Greco’s assassins to slit your throat in some forgotten coastal town."
"And choice two?" Lucia challenged, her amber eyes flashing with defiant pride.
Dante’s lips curved into a slow, devastating smile—a smile of an emperor preparing to conquer a kingdom.
"Choice two: you stay in Sicily. You stand beside me as my equal. We pool your forensic financial genius with my territorial army to hunt down Salvatore Greco, expose Magistrate Valli, and avenge your father's death."
"And how do I stay in Sicily without being arrested by Valli’s corrupt judges or gunned down in the street?" Lucia countered.
Dante’s hand rose, his knuckles brushing lightly along the smooth curve of her jaw, his thumb lingering over the pulse point at her throat. The heat of his touch was scorchingly intimate, sending shivers racing down her spine.
"Under Sicilian law and Cosa Nostra tradition, there is only one sanctuary that neither the police nor rival syndicates dare violate," Dante murmured, his voice dropping into a husky, seductive cadence. "You become my wife."
Lucia froze, her eyes widening in disbelief. "Your wife? An arranged marriage?"
"A sovereign marriage of convenience," Dante corrected smoothly. "As the betrothed of Don Dante Moretti, you fall under the ancient protection of the Moretti bloodline. Every caporegime, every soldier, and every port authority officer on this island will answer with their lives for your safety. You will have full, unrestricted access to my financial servers, my bank ledgers, and my intelligence network."
"And what do you get in return, Don Moretti?" Lucia asked, her breath catching as his gaze darkened with unmasked hunger.
"I get the sharpest financial mind in Italy to dismantle my enemies," Dante answered softly, his fingers sliding into the chestnut waves of her hair, gently tilting her face up toward his. "And I get a woman who doesn't tremble before the Falcon."
Lucia stared into his slate-grey eyes. She saw danger, darkness, and an untamed, ruthless power. But she also saw an unyielding code of honor—the same honor that had earned her father’s trust.
She took a slow, deep breath, her heart hammering against her ribs as she made her decision.
"On three conditions, Moretti," Lucia stated firmly.
Dante raised a dark brow, amused by her audacity. "Name them."
"First: we work as absolute partners. You conceal nothing from me regarding the Corvo syndicate. Second: when we capture Salvatore Greco, he faces justice for my father’s murder. And third: this marriage is strictly professional."
Dante let out a low, velvet chuckle that sent a thrilling jolt of warmth straight to her core. He stepped into her personal space, his chest brushing hers, his gaze dropping to her parted lips before rising back to her eyes.
"Agreed on the first two, Dottoressa," Dante whispered, his deep baritone vibrating with intoxicating promise. "As for the third... we shall see how long your professional resolve lasts once we reach Taormina."
The heavy elevator doors opened, and Lorenzo Cassano strode into the shattered penthouse, flanked by three heavily armed tactical operatives wearing body armor and carrying submachine guns. In Lorenzo's gloved hands were two recovered Russian-manufactured Dragunov SVD sniper rifles, their polymer stocks engraved with the distinctive talons of a raven—the trademark signature of the Corvo syndicate.
"The shooters are neutralized, Don Dante," Lorenzo reported crisply in Sicilian dialect, bowing his head with deep respect. "Both carried false Greek passports and encrypted radios keyed to Salvatore Greco’s frequency in Catania. Magistrate Valli's units in Rome have already requested emergency tactical authorization from the Carabinieri to raid this facility within sixty minutes."
"They will find only shattered glass and empty desks," Dante replied, his tone chillingly dismissive. "Lorenzo, wipe our local server arrays and initiate the automated port shutdown protocol. No vessel leaves or enters Palermo harbor without my personal biometric clearance."
"Subito, Don Dante," Lorenzo nodded, turning to execute the orders.
Dante walked over to the ebony desk, retrieving an antique silver stiletto with an ivory handle carved in the shape of a falcon's head. He looked at Lucia, his slate-grey eyes burning with solemn, ancient gravity.
"In Sicily, words on paper are written for lawyers and bureaucrats," Dante spoke, his voice dropping into a low, resonant cadence. "Our ancestors sealed covenants that no state could ever dissolve. If you are to be my bride and wage war beside me, Lucia, we seal this compact in the old way."
Dante drew the keen edge of the silver blade across the fleshy pad of his thumb. A single drop of crimson blood welled on his skin. He held the blade toward her, offering the hilt.
Lucia looked at the gleaming silver, then at the blood of the man who ruled Sicily. Three years ago, she would have called this barbaric madness. Tonight, standing in the ruins of the office where she had discovered her father’s true purpose, she understood that only blood could counter the corruption that had murdered Judge Vittorio Bellini.
Without hesitation, Lucia took the stiletto. She pressed the sharp tip to her own thumb, feeling a sharp prick of heat as a bright drop of blood appeared.
Dante stepped forward, taking her hand. He pressed his bleeding thumb firmly against hers, their blood mingling in a warm, electric pulse of shared destiny.
"By the blood of my house and the honor of Vittorio Bellini," Dante vowed in a low, fierce murmur that made her knees tremble, "your enemies are my enemies. Your father's murderers will burn. I swear my life, my steel, and my empire to your protection."
"And by my father's memory," Lucia answered, her amber eyes blazing with unbroken fire, "I swear my intellect, my loyalty, and my truth to this alliance. We will bring them down together."
Dante unclipped his radio, speaking with crisp authority: "Lorenzo, prepare the AgustaWestland on the roof. We depart for Castello di Moretti immediately. And notify the family council in Taormina: Don Dante Moretti has chosen his bride."
Ten minutes later, as the twin turbines of the sleek black AgustaWestland AW109 helicopter spooled up on the rooftop helipad, the night wind whipped Lucia's hair across her cheeks.
Dante guided her into the leather-trimmed cabin, taking the seat directly beside her. As the helicopter lifted into the dark sky above Palermo, the lights of the harbor fell away beneath them.
The helicopter banked eastward, soaring over the rugged interior of Sicily. Below them, ancient Norman watchtowers stood silent sentinel over rolling hills of ancient olive groves, silver-leaved citrus orchards, and the dark, craggy silhouette of the Madonie mountain range.
Dante pointed through the panoramic window toward the eastern horizon, where the snow-dusted, volcanic cone of Mount Etna rose majestically against the dawn, plumes of white steam curling into the rose-tinted sky.
"Beyond Etna lies Taormina," Dante murmured, his baritone filled with quiet pride. "Castello di Moretti sits upon the cliffs of Monte Tauro, seven hundred feet above the Ionian Sea. It was built in 1320 by our Norman ancestors. For seven centuries, emperors, pirate fleets, and rival armies have besieged those walls. None have ever breached them. You will be safe there, Lucia. And there, our campaign begins."
Beside her, Dante's large, warm hand settled over hers, his fingers intertwining with hers in an unbreakable grip.
Lucia looked at their joined hands, feeling the electric pulse of danger, vengeance, and undeniable attraction humming between them.
The audit of Palermo was over. The blood war had begun.
