Chapter 1

The Blood Moon Rejection

Alpha of the Shadow Pack · Kieran Thorne · 2 min read

The Crimson Moon hung heavy in the midnight sky above the Blackwood Valley, bathing the sacred stones of the Silvercrest Pack in an eerie, blood-red luminescence. Five hundred wolves stood packed in tight rings around the ceremonial dais, their breath misting in the freezing autumn air.

Selene Drake stood in the center of the ring, her fingers trembling slightly within the folds of her silk ceremonial dress. For three years, since her eighteenth birthday, she had worn the braided silver cord of a betrothed Luna. Tonight, Jackson Vance was to inherit the mantle of Alpha from his retiring father and finalize their union before the ancestors.

Selene looked toward Jackson. At twenty-four, he was tall, broad-shouldered, with sandy blond hair and piercing blue eyes. But there was no warmth in his gaze tonight—only cold ambition and ruthless disdain.

Beside him stood Talia Sterling, daughter of high pack council elder Malakor Sterling. Talia was draped in ermine and crimson velvet, a mocking smirk playing upon her ruby lips.

Jackson stepped forward onto the center stone, his voice amplified by Alpha command, reverberating through the amphitheater.

"Silvercrest wolves!" Jackson boomed, his gaze sweeping over the crowd before landing mercilessly upon Selene. "A pack is only as strong as its sovereign leaders. The mantle of Luna demands unmatched pedigree, political alliance, and unyielding power. For too long, our traditions have shackled our future to childhood arrangements."

A collective murmur rippled through the ranks of wolves. Selene felt the blood drain from her face.

"Jackson..." she whispered, her heart seizing.

"I, Jackson Vance, Alpha of the Silvercrest Pack," he continued loudly, projecting every syllable with deliberate cruelty, "hereby formally and irrevocably reject you, Selene Drake, as my mate and future Luna. You are weak, your wolf remains dormant, and your bloodline offers nothing to the survival of this pack."

The words struck Selene like physical blows, knocking the air from her lungs. An agonizing ache tore through her chest as the preliminary threads of their pack betrothal snapped like brittle glass. Gasps erupted across the clearing. Talia stepped forward, slipping her manicured hand into Jackson's, her eyes gleaming with triumphant malice.

"Furthermore," Jackson declared, his expression stone cold, "by decree of the High Council, Selene Drake is stripped of her rank, her pack status, and all protections. You are exiled from Silvercrest territory before dawn. If you set foot upon our lands again, you will be hunted down and slaughtered as a rogue."

Talia leaned in, whispering loud enough for the first row to hear, "Run along, little stray. Let's see how long a wolf who cannot even shift survives in the freezing wilderness."

Selene stood completely still amidst the jeering sneers and cold stares of wolves she had known since childhood. She did not weep. She did not beg. Lifting her chin with defiant dignity, she tore the silver betrothal cord from her wrist and let it drop into the dust at Jackson's feet.

"You traded honor for a snake, Jackson," Selene said, her voice steady and clear against the night wind. "Remember this moment when your kingdom burns around you."

Turning her back on Silvercrest, she walked out into the gathering dark.
