Chapter 3

The Shadow in the Blizzard

Alpha of the Shadow Pack · Kieran Thorne · 2 min read

Selene braced for the impact, preparing to drive her blade upward into the nearest beast's jaw.

She never got the chance.

The blizzard air detonated. A concussive roar ripped through the mountain pass—a sound so colossal, so filled with sovereign primal dominance, that the very rock face vibrated beneath Selene's feet.

From the swirling white mist above the ridge, a gargantuan shadow descended like an avalanche of pure black fury.

The beast hit the ground with the force of a meteor. It was a wolf of monstrous proportions—standing nearly five feet at the shoulder, its coat blacker than midnight velvet, rippling with corded, lethal muscle. Its eyes burned not with rogue madness, but with blazing, molten gold that pierced straight through the tempest.

With a single blur of motion, the black wolf intercepted the first leaping rogue in mid-air. Powerful jaws snapped shut with a sickening crunch of shattered bone. The rogue didn't even have time to scream before the black beast threw the lifeless carcass thirty feet against the boulders.

The second rogue skidded to an abrupt halt in terror, whining as its belly pressed into the red-stained snow.

The black wolf turned. A low, subterranean growl rumbled in its chest, vibrating with an Alpha aura so suffocating that the air pressure in the canyon plummeted.

The gray leader tried to turn and flee, but the black beast was a phantom of death. In three thunderous bounds, it overtook the rogue, pinned the beast to the frozen earth with a massive paw, and tore its throat open in a spray of crimson that steamed against the snow.

Silence crashed back over the canyon, broken only by the howling wind and the heavy, rhythmic breathing of the monstrous predator.

Selene leaned against the stone wall, her hunting knife lowered, her breath caught in her throat. She had heard the whispered legends of the northern borders. There was only one creature alive that commanded such terrifying size and lethal majesty.

The sovereign ruler of the Shadow Ridge Pack.

The Black Beast of the North.

The wolf slowly turned its massive head toward her. Its golden eyes locked directly onto Selene's.
