The acoustics of Boston Symphony Hall were revered worldwide as an immaculate temple of sound, where every pluck of horsehair against wound steel resonated like a prayer. Beneath the gilded proscenium arch and the hundred-bulb crystal chandeliers, twenty-three-year-old Maya Vance stood as the guest soloist with the Boston Philharmonic, her 1742 Guarneri del Gesù violin tucked beneath her jaw.

Her fingers danced across the ebony fingerboard with blinding speed and exquisite, heart-wrenching precision, tearing the mournful melodies of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major from the instrument’s spruce belly. She was dressed in an off-the-shoulder gown of midnight-black velvet that hugged the slender, athletic contours of her frame, her auburn hair pinned into a loose, elegant chignon that left the pale, graceful arch of her neck exposed.

To the two thousand patrons filling the crimson-cushioned seats, she was a generational prodigy, a rising virtuoso who performed with an intoxicating mixture of fiery defiance and haunting melancholy.
