Chapter 1

The Heist at Hôtel de Paris

Lethal Gambit · Scarlett Brooks · 6 min read

The midnight air over Monte Carlo tasted of sea salt, expensive vintage champagne, and the electric thrill of imminent catastrophe. High above the sparkling turquoise harbor of Monaco, the penthouse suite of the historic Hôtel de Paris was draped in shadows, punctuated only by the rhythmic sweeping beams of the city’s lighthouse filtering through sheer silk curtains.

Inside the private gallery of the suite, twenty-five-year-old Geneva Scott crouched before the colossal, floor-to-ceiling titanium vault of the De Beers private exhibition. She was dressed in skin-tight tactical black silk that hugged every athletic curve of her slender frame, her dark auburn hair pulled back into a sleek, functional braid that reached between her shoulder blades. Around her neck hung an infrared optic loupe, and in her gloved right hand, she gripped a specialized laser acoustic decoder.

For three agonizing years as the chief tactical recovery investigator for Lloyd's of London and the International Art Recovery Syndicate, Geneva had tracked a ghost. Interpol called him "The Phantom"—a master jewel thief who had plundered royal collections from Tokyo to Zurich without leaving a single fingerprint, fiber, or camera trace. But Geneva was a forensic gemologist with a black belt in Krav Maga and a photographic memory for structural blueprints. She knew his patterns. She knew his arrogance. And she knew that tonight, during the Monaco Grand Prix charity gala, he would come for the Blood Star Diamond—a flawless, fifty-carat crimson gem valued at one hundred and fifty million dollars.

A soft, metallic click resonated from the interior of the vault.

Geneva froze, her sapphire-blue eyes narrowing into cold slits. The vault door had not been forced; it was unlatching from the inside.

The eight-inch-thick circular titanium door swung silently outward on oiled hydraulic hinges.

Stepping through the opening with the effortless grace of a stalking panther was a man who seemed carved from the very shadows of the room. He stood well over six feet three inches tall, his broad shoulders and tapered waist outlined in a bespoke midnight-black tuxedo that looked like it had been tailored on Savile Row. Beneath the brim of his dark fedora, his face was lethally handsome—high aristocratic cheekbones, a strong chiseled jawline shadowed by dark stubble, and eyes of striking, stormy hazel-green that sparkled with golden flecks of dangerous amusement. In his gloved left hand, he held a velvet pouch; in his right, a four-inch ceramic lockpick tool.

"You're late, Special Investigator Scott," the man spoke. His voice was a rich, velvet-gravel Italian baritone that resonated through the quiet room like a low chord of dark cello music. "I had expected you at eleven forty-five. The elevator service shaft on the north face is remarkably drafty this time of year."

Geneva rose from her crouch with fluid, deadly precision, her right hand sliding beneath her tailored lapel, drawing her customized Walther PPK 9mm pistol in a single unbroken motion. The front sight aligned dead center with his broad chest.

"Freeze, Phantom," Geneva said, her voice crisp, calm, and laced with pure venom. "Hands where I can see them. Step two paces to your left, away from the vault mechanism. If you so much as twitch a finger, I will put two rounds through your kneecaps and drag you to Interpol headquarters myself."

Matteo Bianchi did not twitch; instead, a slow, breathtakingly wicked smirk spread across his sculpted lips. He slowly tilted his fedora back with one finger, his stormy hazel-green eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that sent an uninvited, traitorous jolt of heat coursing straight down Geneva’s spine.

"Three years you have followed me across five continents, Geneva," Matteo murmured smoothly, taking a slow, deliberate step forward, ignoring the black muzzle pointed at his heart. "Tokyo, Geneva, New York, and now the Riviera. Tell me... is it the diamonds you are hunting with such ferocious passion, or have you simply grown addicted to the sound of my voice?"

"I am addicted to the thought of slamming an iron cell door shut in your arrogant face, Bianchi," Geneva spat, her finger tightening against the trigger curve, refusing to yield an inch of ground as his imposing shadow fell over her. "Drop the velvet pouch. Now."

"I would gladly surrender the stones to you, mia bella," Matteo replied, his baritone dropping an octave into a low, intimate rasp as he closed the remaining distance, stopping barely a foot from her. The intoxicating scent of him hit her senses like a physical blow—rich Italian cedar, crisp bergamot, expensive Tuscan leather, and the dangerous tang of adrenaline. "Except for one minor inconvenience: the pouch is empty."

Geneva’s brow furrowed. "What did you say?"

"The Blood Star Diamond was never in this vault," Matteo said, his eyes darkening with sudden, lethal seriousness. "Someone beat us both to it twenty minutes ago. And if my tactical radio intercept is correct... we have precisely thirty seconds before six mercenary commandos with suppressed automatic rifles breach that double door to execute us both."

Before Geneva could process his words, the heavy mahogany double doors of the penthouse suite were blown off their hinges by a concussive breach charge. Shards of splintered wood and choking white smoke billowed into the gallery as four heavily armed men clad in black tactical gear and Kevlar vests swarmed into the room, raising Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine guns.

"Down!" Matteo roared.

His massive arm hooked around Geneva’s waist with blinding speed, lifting her clean off her feet and pulling her flush against his chest as he threw both their bodies sideways behind the thick titanium door of the open vault.

A hail of suppressed 9mm rounds chewed through the plaster walls and antique gilded mirrors where Geneva had been standing a second earlier, raining shards of glass across the Persian carpet.

Geneva hit the marble floor inside the vault with Matteo’s heavy, muscular body shielding hers from the incoming fire. Her face was inches from his; she could feel the thundering, steady rhythm of his heart against her ribs, the searing heat radiating from his skin, and the undeniable, electric friction of their bodies pressed together in the dark.

"Are you hit?" Matteo demanded, his hazel eyes scanning her face with an intensity that was almost painfully tender.

"I'm fine!" she hissed, shoving against his broad shoulders, though her pulse hammered violently in her throat. "Get off me, Bianchi!"

"Such gratitude," Matteo chuckled softly, drawing a suppressed Beretta automatic from his shoulder holster with lethal elegance. "On my mark, we move through the private service chute behind the vault lining. We fight our way to the harbor together, or we die in this suite. What is your choice, investigator?"

Geneva looked from the smoking doorway to the devastatingly handsome thief who held her life in his hands. Her jaw set into iron resolve.

"Move," she commanded, cocking her Walther. "And if you try to abandon me, I will shoot you myself."

Matteo flashed a dazzling, predatory smile. "A woman after my own heart. Let us dance."

Behind the heavy titanium barrier of the open vault, Geneva re-checked the tactical laser sight on her Walther PPK, the green dot trembling slightly against the opposite steel plate before stabilizing under her disciplined grip. The concussive thuds of suppressed automatic fire chewed through the antique wainscoting outside, accompanied by the muffled shouts of mercenary commandos coordinating their sweep.

"They're moving in two-man bounding overwatch," Geneva whispered, her forensic tactical training kicking in with icy clarity. "They will deploy flash-bang canisters through the entrance in ten seconds."

Matteo leaned close, his broad chest pressed flush against her back, his hand wrapping warm and commanding over hers on the pistol grip. "Then let us ensure they find only empty air and burned fuses, Geneva. The service shaft leads directly to the laundry chute on level minus-two. Stay close behind me."

She looked into his stormy hazel eyes, feeling an electric rush of adrenaline that banished every lingering doubt. "Right behind you, Bianchi. Move."
