Chapter 5

The Red Velvet Gown

Lethal Gambit · Scarlett Brooks · 5 min read

The afternoon sun bathed the Boulevard de la Croisette in Cannes in a shimmering glaze of Mediterranean light. Luxury boutiques, palm trees, and supercars lined the famous boulevard, where the ultra-wealthy shopped under the discreet protection of private security details.

Inside the private, appointment-only salon of Maison de Haute Couture on Rue d'Antibes, the heavy velvet drapes had been drawn to ensure total privacy.

Geneva stood upon a circular raised mahogany dais before a three-way gilded mirror, surrounded by two French master seamstresses kneeling with pincushions and silver measuring tapes.

She stared at her reflection, her breath catching in her throat.

The gown Matteo had selected was a masterpiece of Parisian couture: a custom creation fashioned from liquid crimson silk velvet that clung to her slender, athletic curves like a second skin. The front featured a daring, elegant sweetheart neckline that showcased the smooth, flushed swell of her breasts, but the true drama was in the back—a plunging, seamless line of exposed skin that dipped all the way to the seductive curve of her lower spine. Her auburn hair had been pinned up in an intricate, sophisticated chignon, leaving her long, slender neck bare and vulnerable.

The velvet curtains of the private viewing lounge parted.

Matteo Bianchi stepped into the room. He had changed into a bespoke, three-piece charcoal Italian wool suit with a crisp white shirt open at the collar, looking every inch the billionaire Tuscan count.

He stopped dead in his tracks five paces from the dais.

For five long, breathless seconds, the master thief who had faced down armed police and naval blockades without batting an eye could not utter a single word. His stormy hazel-green eyes dilated, sweeping over every curve of her body with an intensity so raw, so violently possessive, that the seamstresses quietly bowed their heads and retreated through the rear dressing curtain.

"Well, Bianchi?" Geneva asked, breaking the suffocating silence, raising an arched eyebrow with a mixture of nervous defiance and feminine pride. "Does it meet the exacting standards of House Bianchi, or should I ask for something with more Kevlar?"

Matteo walked slowly toward the dais, his combat boots making no sound against the thick wool carpet. He stopped at the edge of the platform, looking up at her with a look of unvarnished, predatory hunger that made Geneva’s core clench with an unexpected, searing ache.

"Kevlar would be an insult to the gods, Geneva," Matteo whispered, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that sent goosebumps prickling across her bare shoulders. "You look... devastating. You will not merely enter that casino, mia bella; you will set the entire room on fire."

He reached into the inner pocket of his suit jacket, withdrawing a heavy, velvet-lined leather case stamped with the gold crest of House Bianchi.

He opened the case. Resting inside upon black satin was a historic family heirloom: the Fire of Tuscany necklace—an exquisite, nineteenth-century collar of platinum and white gold set with eighty carats of flawless Burmese rubies and brilliant pavé diamonds.

Geneva drew in a sharp, reverent breath. "Matteo... that is museum-grade antiquities. It belongs in the Pitti Palace."

"It belongs on my fiancée," Matteo said simply, stepping onto the dais behind her.

Geneva’s heart began to hammer against her ribs as his towering frame closed the distance. She watched him in the triple mirror—his broad shoulders framing her reflection, his rugged, scarred face softened by an expression of breathtaking tenderness.

Matteo lifted the heavy platinum collar, bringing it around her throat. His large, warm fingers brushed against the sensitive skin of her neck, sending a concussive shiver coursing straight down her spine. The rubies felt cool against her collarbone, but the heat radiating from Matteo’s body burned through the velvet of her gown.

He fastened the platinum clasp with a soft *click*. His hands didn't drop; instead, his large palms settled gently upon the bare, exposed skin of her shoulders, his thumbs smoothing small, firm circles over her collarbone.

"Look at yourself, Geneva," Matteo murmured, leaning down until his lips brushed the sensitive skin beneath her ear. "You were born to command rooms like this. Tomorrow night, no one will see an investigator on the run. They will see the woman who tamed the Wolf of Tuscany."

Geneva looked into the mirror. She saw a woman transformed—radiant, breathtaking, and unmistakably dangerous, framed by the dark, magnificent predator whose hands were claiming her with every touch.

She turned slowly in his embrace, facing him, her hands coming up to rest against the hard lapels of his suit jacket. The physical proximity was suffocating; her chest brushed against his with every breath, and the wild, untamed heat between them flared into an open inferno.

"Do not mistake a tactical disguise for reality, Matteo," she whispered, her voice husky, her sapphire eyes searching his. "I am still the woman who swore to put you in handcuffs."

Matteo’s mouth curved into a slow, wicked smile that made her knees feel weak. He leaned in, his lips hovering a millimeter from hers, his gaze dropping to her parted, trembling mouth.

"Then you had better keep a tight grip on those cuffs, Geneva," he growled softly against her lips. "Because after tomorrow night... I have no intention of ever letting you go."

The fitting in the private Cannes salon concluded with an atmosphere charged with undeniable, simmering heat. As the French seamstresses returned with the final silk garment bag, Matteo handed the head designer a platinum credit card without looking at the bill, signing the voucher with an elegant, practiced flourish of his gold fountain pen.

Geneva changed back into her sleek dark trousers and ivory silk blouse, but the weight of the Burmese rubies still seemed to burn against her collarbone like an invisible brand. She watched Matteo through the mirror as he zipped the heavy leather garment bag, his movements fluid, disciplined, and lethally graceful.

"The gala invitation arrived twenty minutes ago on Rafael’s secure terminal," Matteo said, slinging the garment bag over his broad shoulder. "Victor Reyes has confirmed our presence in the Salon Privé. He has personally reserved a private baccarat suite for the high-stakes table at eleven o'clock."

Geneva turned to him, adjusting the cuffs of her blouse, her eyes sharp and focused. "He wants us close where his surveillance can monitor our every move. He knows we are the only two people who could possibly identify the micro-photonic cell inside the diamond."

"Let him watch," Matteo murmured softly, stepping up to her, his large hand coming to rest warm and possessive against the small of her back as he guided her toward the private rear exit of the boutique. "By the time Victor Reyes realizes that the mouse has invited the cat to dinner... the trap will have already snapped shut around his throat."

Geneva felt the intoxicating heat of his palm through her silk shirt, a delicious, dangerous thrill racing through her veins as they stepped out into the golden afternoon sun of the French Riviera, ready to launch their high-stakes gambit.

The bell above the boutique door chimed softly as they stepped onto the bustling sidewalk of Cannes, surrounded by shoppers in designer sunglasses and linen suits. Matteo slipped his arm around her waist, drawing her close in an effortless display of aristocratic possession that made every passerby turn in envy, sealing their cover story before the world.
