Chapter 3

The Safehouse in Saint-Tropez

Lethal Gambit · Scarlett Brooks · 5 min read

The first light of dawn broke over the French Riviera in pale, pearlescent strokes of gold and lavender, illuminating the secluded rocky peninsula of Cap Camarat near Saint-Tropez.

Perched high upon the red porphyry cliffs above the azure waters of the Mediterranean stood Villa Belladonna—a monolithic modernist compound of white stone, reinforced glass, and cantilevered terraces surrounded by towering umbrella pines, electric security fences, and state-of-the-art radar domes.

The matte-black Aston Martin glided through the biometric iron gates, descending into an underground subterranean garage carved directly into the seaside cliff. Parked inside were two high-speed tactical interceptor speedboats, a customized Eurocopter helicopter, and racks of advanced scuba rebreathers and tactical gear.

Matteo cut the engine. The quiet that descended over the garage was profound, broken only by the rhythmic tick of the cooling exhaust manifold and the distant, muffled boom of the Mediterranean surf.

Geneva stepped out of the vehicle, her limbs stiff and sore from the adrenaline-fueled flight across the border. She stood on the polished concrete floor, her hand resting instinctively near the holster of her Walther, her sapphire eyes assessing every security camera and exit route with professional paranoia.

"Relax, Geneva," Matteo said, stepping out of the car, unbuttoning his tuxedo jacket and tossing it onto the hood. He had rolled his crisp white dress shirt sleeves up to his elbows, revealing powerful, corded forearms etched with faint scars and the intricate black-ink tattoo of an ancient Roman compass rose on his left wrist. "You are completely safe here. The perimeter is protected by microwave motion sensors and private encrypted satellite relays. Even Reyes’s mercenaries cannot track this frequency."

"I am never relaxed when I am surrounded by an outlaw's private armory," Geneva replied coldly, her gaze sweeping the heavy tactical lockers. "Show me the evidence, Bianchi. You claimed Reyes stole the Blood Star Diamond. Where is the proof?"

"Upstairs," Matteo answered smoothly, gesturing toward a private glass elevator. "Follow me."

The elevator ascended to the main living pavilion of the villa—an expansive, open-concept salon featuring floor-to-ceiling glass walls that looked out across the boundless turquoise sea. In the center of the room sat a massive white marble kitchen island, a sunken seating lounge with plush leather sofas, and an expansive glass drafting table covered in computer monitors, forensic spectrometers, and holographic blueprints.

A young man with unruly dark curls, wire-rimmed glasses, and a headset over one ear spun around in an ergonomic desk chair as they entered. It was Rafael Costa, twenty-nine, Matteo’s chief technical specialist and former naval cybersecurity prodigy.

"Boss! Thank God," Rafael breathed, exhaling a cloud of vape smoke. "The Monaco news channels are calling it the 'Heist of the Century.' They've released Geneva's face on every European news alert. Her bank accounts in London were frozen thirty minutes ago by order of the British Foreign Office."

Geneva felt the floor tilt beneath her feet. "My accounts? On whose authority?"

"Brigitte Moreau, your director at Lloyd's," Rafael said sympathetically, tapping his keyboard to bring up the official British Treasury order on a large monitor. "She signed the freeze warrant personally, citing 'imminent flight risk and suspected collaboration with international art syndicates.'"

Geneva’s jaw clenched so hard her teeth ached. Brigitte Moreau had been her mentor for five years, the woman who had recruited her from Oxford’s forensic gemology department. To see her signature on an asset freeze warrant felt like a physical knife in the back.

"Brigitte didn't sign that out of malice, Geneva," Matteo said softly, stepping up beside her, his voice devoid of mockery for the first time. "Her hands are tied. The evidence left in that penthouse vault was surgically constructed. If she didn't freeze your assets, the Treasury would have placed her under arrest as an accessory."

He stepped toward the holographic drafting table, pressing a sequence of keys. A rotating three-dimensional scan of the Blood Star Diamond materialized in the air before them, glowing with crimson light.

"Look closely at the pavilion facet on the lower girdle," Matteo instructed, pointing his finger at a microscopic anomaly in the crystal lattice.

Geneva leaned in, her academic curiosity instantly overriding her anger. Her sapphire eyes widened as she recognized the distinctive laser-etched pattern. "That's not an inclusion. That’s a micro-photonic storage cell."

"Precisely," Matteo said, his hazel-green eyes burning with admiration at her quick intellect. "The Blood Star Diamond is not merely a jewel. Three weeks ago, British Aerospace and French Naval Defense completed the prototype for the 'Aegis Network'—a quantum satellite encryption key capable of overriding every military radar and drone frequency in the Mediterranean basin. Victor Reyes paid five million euros to an engineer in Toulon to laser-etch the entire master code into the carbon structure of that diamond."

Geneva gasped, the horrifying scope of the conspiracy falling into place. "Reyes doesn't just want to sell the diamond to a private collector. He wants to sell the Aegis encryption key to an international rogue cartel."

"And the auction is scheduled for seventy-two hours from now," Matteo stated, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. "During the Monaco Yacht Club’s private high-stakes gala at the Casino de Monte-Carlo."

Geneva looked from the holographic diamond to the towering Italian thief beside her. "And how do you propose we get inside a high-security private auction when every cop in Europe is looking for our faces?"

Matteo’s lips curled into that dangerous, devastating smile that made her heart race.

"Simple, mia bella," Matteo whispered, leaning down until his lips brushed the shell of her ear. "We go as ourselves: Count Matteo Bianchi and his stunning, notoriously ruthless American fiancée. We buy our way into the lion's den... and we take back our lives."

In the center of the expansive salon of Villa Belladonna, Rafael Costa tapped his keyboard with furious speed, splitting the high-definition monitor array into four synchronized tactical feeds: Interpol’s red-notice bulletin, the Monaco police dispatch logs, the live maritime AIS radar of the Riviera, and the satellite footprint of Victor Reyes’s luxury megayacht *The Obsidian Queen*.

"Reyes’s flagship is currently anchored four miles off the coast of Cap d'Ail," Rafael reported, adjusting his glasses. "Her communications are routed through an encrypted military-grade transponder. He has thirty private security contractors on board, all former South African mercenaries."

Geneva walked over to the glass table, leaning her hands on the polished surface, her eyes analyzing the ship's specifications. "She has a helicopter pad on the stern and two high-speed tender bays on the waterline. If Reyes realizes he is compromised during the casino auction, that yacht will be his primary extraction vehicle."

"Which is why we will cut his escape lines before we ever step onto the casino floor," Matteo said, coming up behind her, placing a fresh mug of black coffee beside her hand. "Rafael has already uploaded an acoustic trojan into the Monaco harbor traffic control. When the time comes, the harbor sea gates will lock shut, and Reyes’s yacht will be dead in the water."

Geneva took a sip of the coffee, looking up into Matteo’s intense, unyielding gaze. Despite the terrifying reality of having her career, her bank accounts, and her reputation shattered in a single night, standing inside this high-tech fortress beside the most dangerous man in Europe made her feel extraordinarily, thrillingly invincible.

Outside the panoramic windows of Villa Belladonna, the morning sun turned the Mediterranean into a shimmering sheet of liquid sapphire, standing sentinel over the high-tech sanctuary where two mortal rivals prepared to turn the tables on an international syndicate.
