Chapter 4
The Fake Engagement
Lethal Gambit · Scarlett Brooks · 5 min read
The proposal hung in the cool, ocean-scented air of the villa salon like a live grenade.
Geneva Scott stared at Matteo Bianchi, her eyebrows raised in absolute, incredulous disbelief. "A fake engagement? Are you out of your mind, Bianchi? I am a senior investigator for Lloyd's of London, not a high-society trophy to drape on your arm!"
Matteo laughed—a rich, deep, resonant sound that vibrated with effortless confidence as he poured two cups of dark espresso from a gleaming chrome machine on the marble island. He slid one cup across the stone toward her, his hazel-green eyes dancing with amusement.
"Drink your espresso, Geneva. It clears the mind," Matteo said smoothly, leaning his forearms against the marble counter. "Consider the tactical reality: Victor Reyes is an elitist narcissist who hosts private auctions only for verified European aristocracy and billionaire consortiums. He doesn't allow unattached operatives into his inner sanctum. To get an invitation to the Salon Privé at the Casino de Monte-Carlo on Saturday night, a guest must present a documented net worth of at least five hundred million euros and bring a partner of equal social standing."
Geneva crossed her arms over her chest, refusing to touch the coffee. "And where do you plan to find five hundred million euros? From your stolen art vault?"
"I am an Italian count, Geneva," Matteo replied, his tone laced with dry aristocratic irony. "House Bianchi has held lands, vineyards, and private merchant shipping charters in Tuscany since 1540. My legitimate holdings are managed through private trusts in Lugano. My wealth is entirely documented, verified, and untouched by Interpol."
Geneva blinked, caught off guard. "You... you're an actual count?"
"Conté Matteo Alessandro Bianchi di Montalcino," he recited with a mock formal bow, his eyes gleaming with wicked charm. "At your service, my lady. My grandfather left me four palazzos, twelve hundred hectares of Chianti vineyards, and a profound distaste for government taxation. The thievery... well, that was an expensive hobby born of boredom and a desire to reclaim antiquities looted from my family during the war."
Geneva pressed two fingers to her temples, feeling a headache building behind her eyes. "So the world's most elusive art thief is a bored billionaire aristocrat with an identity crisis."
"I prefer the term 'clandestine curator,'" Matteo countered, sipping his espresso. "The point is this: my persona is untouchable in high-society circles. But an unattached bachelor arriving at Reyes's auction raises immediate suspicion; Reyes knows I work alone. However... if Count Bianchi arrives with his fierce, notoriously brilliant American fiancée—the very investigator who supposedly defected from Lloyd's after falling madly, hopelessly into his bed... Reyes will believe every word of the cover story. He will welcome us as the power couple of the criminal underworld."
"Falling madly into your bed?" Geneva choked out, a fierce, indignant flush heating her cheeks. "In your dreams, Bianchi!"
Matteo stepped around the marble island, closing the distance between them with that silent, predatory grace that always made her breath hitch. He stopped inches from her, looking down into her sapphire-blue eyes with an intensity that stripped away every layer of her defenses.
"It must be convincing, Geneva," he murmured, his deep baritone vibrating with unmasked heat as his large hand rose, his fingers gently brushing a stray auburn curl from her cheek. His touch was electric, sending a sharp, delicious shiver racing down her spine. "Reyes has eyes everywhere. At that gala, you will wear fifty carats of Bianchi family diamonds. You will look at me with burning desire in your eyes. You will let me hold your waist, kiss your neck, and whisper intimate secrets in your ear before three hundred witnesses."
Geneva’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her breath came in shallow, rapid gasps as his thumb lightly traced the sensitive line of her jaw down to the hollow of her throat.
"And if I refuse?" she whispered, though her voice lacked the cold steel she intended, betrayed by the sudden rapid rise and fall of her chest beneath his gaze.
Matteo leaned in, his lips hovering a millimeter from hers, his warm breath smelling of rich espresso and wild mint. "If you refuse, you spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary for a crime you didn't commit, while Victor Reyes sells the Aegis satellite key to terrorists. But you won't refuse, Geneva. Because you have more courage in your little finger than all the bureaucrats in London combined. And because... deep down beneath that bulletproof armor... you want to know what it feels like to burn with me."
Geneva swallowed hard, looking directly into his stormy hazel eyes. She saw the danger, the arrogance, and the raw, unyielding magnetism that made him the most intoxicating man she had ever encountered.
She slapped his hand away from her face, though the fierce sparkle in her eyes gave away her surrender.
"We do this on my terms, Bianchi," Geneva declared, her voice firm and uncompromising. "We get the diamond. We expose Reyes. We clear my name. And the moment the dust settles... our truce is over."
Matteo smiled a slow, triumphant smile that took her breath away.
"Agreed, my fierce fiancée," Matteo murmured, extending his hand. "Now let us go shopping in Cannes. A countess cannot attend the Grand Prix gala in tactical silk."
The tension inside the villa salon was palpable, vibrating with the electric charge of an approaching thunderstorm. Geneva finished her espresso, setting the delicate porcelain cup onto the marble island with a crisp, deliberate click that echoed through the room.
"If we are going to play this game, Bianchi, we need ground rules," Geneva said, stepping toward him, her arms folded across her chest, her posture radiating uncompromising authority. "First: I am in charge of the forensic evidence. Every file, every ledger, and the Blood Star Diamond itself will be handed over to international authorities the moment Reyes is neutralized."
"Agreed," Matteo answered without hesitation, his hazel eyes watching her with amused respect. "I have no desire to keep a diamond laced with military satellite ciphers. The only thing I intend to take from this operation is my freedom and Reyes’s total destruction."
"Second," Geneva continued, holding up two fingers, "we maintain professional boundaries. No private excursions. No unnecessary physical contact outside of what is required to convince Reyes’s watchers."
Matteo’s mouth curved into that devastating, wicked smirk that always made her pulse skip an erratic beat. He leaned across the island, his gaze locking onto hers with unmasked hunger. "And what happens if Victor Reyes demands a demonstration of our mutual passion at the gala, Geneva? If he expects the Count of Montalcino to kiss his radiant bride before the high-roller tables?"
Geneva held his gaze, refusing to blush, her chin tilted high with regal defiance. "Then you had better hope your acting skills match your lockpicking, Count Bianchi. Because if your hands wander where they shouldn't... I still have three rounds left in my Walther."
Matteo let out a low, appreciative chuckle that rumbled through the spacious room. "A fair bargain, Special Investigator. Let us see who surrenders to the script first."
In the quiet of the morning kitchen, with the aroma of espresso lingering in the air, the terms of their unholy alliance were sealed. A master thief and a federal investigator, bound by a fake diamond ring and an undeniable fire that threatened to consume them both before the week was out.
