Chapter 1
The Bloodmoon Banquet
The Alpha King's Discarded Luna · Elena Vance · 6 min read
The great timber hall of the Bloodmoon Packhouse was ablaze with the light of three iron chandeliers, roaring hearths of aged pine, and the raucous laughter of five hundred wolves celebrating the annual Harvest Mating Banquet.
Nineteen-year-old Selene Silverwood stood in the shadows near the kitchen service doors, smoothing down the simple, floor-length emerald dress she had sewn by hand from discarded drapery fabric. Her silver-white hair—a color unique to her and mocked by the pack as the mark of a 'runt'—fell in soft waves past her shoulder blades. Her heart was beating like a trapped hummingbird against her ribs, her breath catching in her throat every time the massive double doors of the hall swung open.
Tonight was the night of the Blood Moon.
According to ancient werewolf lore, on the night of her nineteenth birthday, an unmated wolf would finally perceive the divine scent of their fated mate. For three years, since her mother had passed away from a mysterious fever, Selene had lived as the pack’s unacknowledged orphan, scrubbing flagstone floors and serving tankards of spiced ale, enduring the cruel snickers of the high-born purebloods.
Through every insult and cold winter night in the drafty attic, one secret hope had kept her alive: the memory of Alpha Derek Blackwood’s warm smiles during their childhood, and the secret promises he had whispered behind the old training arena before he took over the pack.
Suddenly, the heavy iron-reinforced doors at the head of the hall were thrown wide.
A hush swept through the cavernous room, replacing the drunken shouting with an electric, reverent silence.
Alpha Derek Blackwood strode into the hall, radiating the lethal, commanding presence of a twenty-four-year-old predator at the peak of his power. Standing six-foot-three in black leather combat breeches and a charcoal wool tunic laced with silver thread, his muscular physique and sharp, aristocratic jawline commanded absolute submission.
And then, the scent hit Selene.
It was not a subtle fragrance; it was a physical blow that slammed into her chest, knocking the air completely out of her lungs. The rich, intoxicating aroma of crushed pine needles, dark cedarwood, and crackling lightning flooded her senses, sparking a sudden, blazing fire beneath her skin. Her inner wolf—dormant and silent for nineteen years—let out an ecstatic, primordial howl in the back of her mind: *MATE! MATE! HE IS OUR MATE!*
Tears of overwhelming, euphoric relief sprung to Selene’s violet-amber eyes. The Moon Goddess had not forgotten her. The man she had loved in silence was her destined counterpart, her protector, her Alpha.
She took an instinctive step out from the shadows of the doorway, her lips parting to call his name.
But Derek was not looking toward the service hall. His dark, golden eyes were fixed entirely on the high velvet dais.
Arm in arm with Derek walked Tanya Thorne, the twenty-two-year-old daughter of Elder Malakar. Tanya was draped in a breathtaking gown of crimson silk that clung to her voluptuous curves, diamonds dripping from her ears, her platinum-blonde curls pinned with gold filigree. She carried herself with the brazen, smug arrogance of a woman who had already won the ultimate prize.
Derek mounted the three marble steps of the high dais, raising his right hand. The five hundred pack members instantly dropped to their knees in unison, their heads bowed in total deference to their sovereign Alpha.
Selene sank to her knees among the serving girls, her heart pounding with a strange, icy knot of dread that began to tighten in the pit of her stomach.
"Pack of the Bloodmoon!" Derek’s voice resonated through the timber rafters like rolling thunder, filled with absolute, unyielding authority. "On this sacred night of the Blood Moon, the ancestors demand that our line be secured with pure, unyielding strength! The border skirmishes with the rogues grow fiercer with every winter. The Bloodmoon Pack cannot afford weakness, hesitation, or half-breeds in its leadership!"
Derek turned to Tanya, a proud, triumphant smile curling his handsome lips. He reached out, his hand clasping hers, raising their joined fingers before the roaring fireplace.
"Tonight, with the unanimous blessing of the Council of Elders, I announce my official mating union with Lady Tanya of House Thorne! Together, we will breed a new generation of pureblood warriors who will expand our territory across the Northern Ridge!"
The hall exploded into a deafening, unified roar of cheers, wolves slamming their tankards onto the wooden tables, howling at the high timber ceilings.
Selene felt as if the floor had dissolved beneath her feet.
The air in her lungs turned to broken glass. Her inner wolf let out a wounded, agonized whimper, curling into a trembling ball within her soul. *No... no, Derek... look at me... smell me...*
Derek raised his hand for silence once more. His amber eyes shifted slowly across the room, tracking the invisible spiritual tether of the mate bond, until his cold gaze locked directly onto Selene kneeling among the kitchen servants.
There was no warmth in his eyes. There was no recognition of their childhood, no remorse, no hesitation. There was only a cold, calculating disgust.
Derek knew. He had smelled the bond the second he entered the hall.
"Bring Selene Silverwood forward!" Derek commanded, his voice cutting through the hall like a winter frost.
Two burly pack enforcers grabbed Selene by the upper arms, hauling her roughly to her feet. Her knees trembled so violently she could barely walk as they dragged her down the central stone aisle between rows of sneering, whispering pack members.
"Look at her," Tanya mocked loudly from the dais, leaning against Derek's chest, her manicured fingers stroking his collarbone. "The kitchen orphan actually thought she could be Luna. Did you truly believe our glorious Alpha would touch a dirty runt with hair like a corpse?"
Selene stopped at the foot of the dais, looking up at Derek, her voice a desperate, trembling whisper that barely carried above the crackle of the hearth.
"Derek... you know the bond is real," Selene whispered, tears spilling over her lashes. "The Moon Goddess chose us. You cannot deny the sacred thread."
Derek looked down at her from his throne, his handsome features twisting into a sneer of utter contempt that shattered the last piece of her innocent heart.
"The Moon Goddess made a mistake, Selene," Derek drawled, his voice ringing with cruel finality. "And tonight... I am correcting it."
Selene swayed where she stood at the foot of the dais, clutching her own cold hands until her knuckles ached, the roar of the hall draining away into a distant hum.
Her mind flashed back to five years ago, before Derek’s father had died in the border skirmishes. Derek had been a fierce, laughing boy of nineteen who would sneak out of the Alpha manor at dawn, bringing warm honey-bread to the servants' quarters where Selene sat mending wool blankets. He had pulled her into the sunny clearing behind the apple orchards, his golden eyes shining with adolescent warmth, whispering: 'When I become Alpha, Selene, you will never have to scrub another stone. You will stand beside me.'
Those promises had been the food that kept her soul alive through years of starvation, cold attics, and the vicious taunts of Tanya Thorne.
Now, standing atop the marble dais, Derek looked like a completely different creature. The warmth had been replaced by the cold, calculating cruelty of an Alpha who measured worth exclusively in territory, silver mines, and political prestige.
Beside Derek, Elder Malakar—a withered, hawk-nosed wolf with graying braids and robes lined in sable fur—stepped forward, his bony hands resting upon Derek's shoulder.
"The Bloodmoon Pack requires an alliance of pureblood nobility to secure our northern trade routes!" Malakar announced, his rasping voice carrying through the hall. "Tanya Thorne carries the ancient blood of the Valley Founders. Her father commands three hundred seasoned warriors and the fertile southern orchards. She is the only worthy Luna for our Alpha!"
Tanya turned slightly, her gaze sweeping condescendingly over the crowd until her malicious blue eyes landed directly on Selene. A cruel, mocking smirk played across her heavily painted crimson lips. Tanya knew. Everyone in the packhouse knew of the childhood affection Derek had once shown the quiet orphan. This coronation was not just a political marriage; it was a deliberate, public execution of Selene's dignity.
Selene looked back at Derek, her violet-amber eyes pleading across the expanse of the noisy hall. The scent of dark cedarwood and crackling lightning was radiating from him in intoxicating, suffocating waves, screaming that they belonged to one another.
When Derek’s gaze met hers, his jaw tightened, but there was no hesitation in his eyes. He had made his calculation, and Selene had been discarded like winter trash.
