Chapter 2
The Severed Bond
The Alpha King's Discarded Luna · Elena Vance · 6 min read
The silence inside the great timber hall was suffocating, heavy with the scent of burning pitch and impending cruelty. Five hundred wolves leaned forward on their benches, their eyes glinting in the firelight like a pack of hungry hyenas scenting blood.
Selene stood trembling at the foot of the marble dais, clutching her hands against her chest. She looked up at Derek—the boy who had once shared wild blackberries with her in the forest, the young warrior who had promised to protect her when her mother died.
"Derek... please," she whispered, her voice cracking with pure agony. "Do not do this. The rejection will tear your soul as much as mine."
"My soul belongs to the glory of the Bloodmoon Pack, Selene," Derek said coldly, his voice devoid of even a shred of human warmth. "And your soul is a pathetic, worthless burden."
He drew himself up to his full six-foot-three height, expanding his chest, the raw, oppressive aura of an Alpha washing over the hall like an iron weight, forcing the weaker wolves to press their foreheads against the flagstones.
He raised his right hand toward the high timber rafters, staring down at Selene with dead, merciless eyes.
"I, Alpha Derek Blackwood of the Bloodmoon Pack," Derek proclaimed in the ancient, sacred tongue of the wolf-kin, his voice vibrating with absolute authority, "hereby reject you, Selene Silverwood, as my fated mate and future Luna. I sever the thread that binds us. I renounce your scent, I renounce your blood, and I banish your memory from my heart forever."
The moment the final syllable echoed off the stones, a white-hot, agonizing blade of supernatural fire plunged straight through Selene’s chest.
It was not physical pain; it was the violent, spiritual ripping of her soul. Her inner wolf let out a bloodcurdling, shattered scream that reverberated through the back of her skull. Selene gasped, her vision flashing blinding white as she collapsed onto both knees, clutching her ribs, vomiting a thin ribbon of blood onto the cold flagstones as the sacred tether of the Moon Goddess snapped with a sickening, spiritual crack.
Derek winced slightly, a momentary grimace of pain tightening his jaw, but he masked it immediately with an arrogant sneer.
Laughter—cruel, mocking, and shrill—broke out from the throne beside him.
Tanya Thorne descended the marble steps, her crimson silk gown trailing over the stones. She stopped before Selene, looking down with venomous triumph. Her manicured hand reached out, catching the delicate silver chain around Selene’s neck.
"And this little trinket certainly doesn't belong to a nameless rogue," Tanya hissed.
With a brutal, violent yank, Tanya ripped the silver moon locket from Selene’s throat. The thin metal chain tore through the tender skin of Selene's neck, drawing a bright crimson bead of blood that dripped onto the stone.
"No!" Selene cried out, reaching with trembling fingers. "That was my mother’s! It’s the only thing I have left of her!"
Tanya laughed, holding the silver medallion up to the firelight. It was an antique silver crescent engraved with three howling wolves and a solitary star—an artifact Selene’s mother had guarded with her life.
"Your mother was a diseased whore who died in the servants' quarters," Tanya spat, tossing the heirloom locket onto the floor before grinding the heel of her leather boot directly into the silver filigree, cracking the glass face. "Now you have nothing. Just like you are nothing."
Derek stepped down from the dais, towering over Selene, his arms crossed over his chest.
"By the laws of the Bloodmoon Pack," Derek announced to the cheering hall, "a rejected mate who carries no noble lineage is an omen of curse and misfortune. You have exactly thirty minutes to clear the pack territory, Selene. If you are found within our borders after midnight, the border sentries have orders to hunt you down and tear you apart like the vermin you are."
"Derek... there is a blizzard outside!" Selene gasped, tears mixing with the blood on her chin. "The temperature is ten below zero! The rogues roam the Silverleaf Forest! I have no coat, no boots, no food!"
Derek leaned down, his breath smelling of dark mead and cruel arrogance.
"Then freeze, Selene," Derek whispered into her ear. "Or let the rogues feast on your bones. Either way, you will never disgrace my packhouse again."
Two enforcers seized her by the hair and arms and began dragging her backward across the bloodstained flagstones toward the heavy timber doors.
The heavy oak doors were thrown open to the howling, sub-zero gale, and the enforcers halted on the threshold, holding her over the lip of the dark while the old elder finished the rite.
Elder Malakar stepped to the front of the dais, his thin lips curling into a triumphant sneer as he raised the ceremonial obsidian dagger of pack governance.
"Let the ancient law of the Blood Moon be fulfilled!" Malakar proclaimed in a voice like rustling dry leaves. "The Alpha has spoken his will! The unworthy bond is severed, and the pack is cleansed of weakness!"
Around the hall, the younger warriors banged the hilts of their hunting knives against the heavy oak tables, a rhythmic, intimidating drumbeat that shook the flagstones beneath Selene’s trembling knees. Several older she-wolves who had known Selene's mother looked down at their plates in silent, guilty shame, but not a single soul raised their voice to defend the orphan girl.
Tanya leaned down, holding the cracked silver crescent locket before Selene’s tear-stained face, dangling it like a piece of refuse.
"Do you want to know what your mother said before she died in the servants' clinic, Selene?" Tanya whispered, her voice dripping with sadistic venom. "She begged my father to send word to the North. She cried that you were a princess, that you had royal blood! My father laughed in her face. He threw her letters into the fireplace and let her choke on her own fever. You come from nothing, and you will die as nothing."
A guttural sob of agonizing grief and incandescent fury broke from Selene's chest. She lunged forward, her hands clawing for the heirloom locket, but an enforcer’s heavy combat boot struck her in the ribs, sending her sprawling across the bloodstained stones, knocking the breath from her lungs.
Derek stepped over her prone body, his heavy leather cloak sweeping across her back, not sparing her a second glance as he returned to his throne.
"Get this filthy creature out of my sight," Derek commanded, settling back into his carved velvet chair, pulling Tanya onto his lap. "If she is still breathing on Bloodmoon territory by midnight, hang her carcass from the southern watchtower."
The enforcers dragged Selene the last few feet, her heels leaving bloody streaks across the floor, and hurled her out into the freezing snow. The massive iron-barred doors slammed shut behind her with an echoing, final boom, and the sound of the pack cheering Derek and Tanya's first public kiss echoed through the freezing night, driving a final, frozen stake through the shattered remains of her heart.
As Selene lay crumpled in the snow outside the heavy timber gates, the bitter cold began to numb her bleeding neck.
From the high battlements above, two junior watch sentries looked down through the iron murder-holes. One of them, a young scout named Toby who had often accepted Selene’s warm herbal broths when he had the winter cough, shook his head in sorrow.
"May the Moon Mother guide her spirit," Toby murmured quietly, making the sign of the wolf over his chest. "To cast an innocent girl into the Silverleaf Forest in the dead of winter is murder. The Alpha's curse will fall upon this house."
"Shut your muzzle, Toby," the elder sentry hissed, tightening his fur cloak. "Alpha Derek has spoken. If you speak a word of pity for the half-breed, Tanya Thorne will have you flogged in the courtyard tomorrow morning. She is dead already. Turn your eyes to the south."
Below the wall, Selene pushed herself up with trembling arms, her breath freezing against her lips. She did not look back at the fortress that had imprisoned her for nineteen years. With blood on her neck and frost in her hair, she turned her face toward the wild, dark trees of the Silverleaf, taking her first ragged steps into destiny.
