Chapter 4
The Shadow of the Beast

The violent tremor that ripped through the forest floor was not an earthquake. It was the physical impact of a god descending onto the battlefield.
A roar—so deep, so thunderous, and so laden with primordial supernatural power that it rattled the teeth inside Selene’s skull—tore through the howling blizzard.
The shockwave blew the swirling snow sideways in an explosive white ring, stripping pine needles from the branches fifty feet above the ground.
The two rogues hovering over Selene froze instantly, their feral madness evaporating into sheer, paralyzing animal terror. Their ears pinned flat against their skulls, their tails tucking tightly between their shivering legs, a pathetic, high-pitched whimper tearing from their throats.
From the dark canopy of the upper ridge, a shadow plummeted like a meteor.
The impact smashed into the frozen earth with a deafening boom.
Standing ten feet away was a creature out of the darkest nightmare and the most terrifying ancient legends.
A Lycan.
He was not a common werewolf who walked on all fours. He was an apex sovereign of the ancient world—standing a monstrous nine feet tall in his shifted war-form, his midnight-black fur bristling with obsidian spikes along his spine. His broad, heavily muscled chest was broader than an oak trunk, his massive arms ending in eight-inch curved obsidian talons that could slice through steel plate.
His eyes were not yellow or amber; they were glowing orbs of molten, liquid gold, burning with an ancient, terrifying intelligence and absolute, lethal sovereignty.
King Kieran Volkov. The Beast of Winterfell.
The nearest rogue let out a terrified screech and attempted to scramble toward the treeline.
Kieran moved with a speed that defied the laws of physics. One second he was ten feet away; the next second, a massive black arm lashed out.
His claws clamped around the rogue’s throat with sickening force. With a casual, effortless flick of his wrist, Kieran snapped the rogue’s neck like a dry twig, hurling the two-hundred-pound carcass thirty feet through the air, shattering it against a limestone boulder.
The second rogue turned to flee, but Kieran lunged forward in a blur of black fur.
His massive jaws clamped over the rogue’s shoulder, lifting the thrashing beast completely off the ground before ripping it in half with a single, brutal twist of his neck. Hot blood sprayed across the fresh snow, hissing as it met the sub-zero air.
The lead rogue—the scarred brute Selene had wounded with the stone—lay trembling in the snowbank, wetting itself in utter horror.
Kieran stalked toward the whimpering creature, each heavy step shaking the frozen ground. He placed a single massive, clawed paw onto the rogue's chest, pressing down until the ribs began to groan and crack beneath the pressure.
Kieran’s eyes of molten gold shifted to look at Selene, who was huddled against the base of the pine tree, bleeding and shivering uncontrollably in her torn emerald dress.
When the Lycan King saw the blood dripping from her neck, the bruised skin on her shoulder, and the frostbite eating into her delicate fingers, the molten gold in his eyes erupted into a raging inferno of homicidal fury.
A low, guttural snarl vibrated in his chest: *You dared lay your filthy paws on her?*
Kieran drove his claws through the rogue’s chest in a single, merciless strike, ripping out the black heart and crushing it to pulp in his fist.
The forest fell into an absolute, breathless silence, broken only by the whistling of the wind and the rapid, wheezing gasps of Selene’s failing lungs.
The explosive arrival of King Kieran Volkov turned the freezing clearing into a slaughterhouse of mythic proportions.
The sheer sonic force of Kieran's nine-foot shifted war-form had literally cracked the three-foot-thick trunks of the surrounding black pines. The air crackled with blue supernatural ozone, the temperature in the clearing dropping another ten degrees from the terrifying, ancient Lycan aura radiating from his obsidian pelt.
Selene had never seen a Lycan before. The southern packs spoke of them only in hushed, terrified whispers around watchtower braziers—describing them as demonic monsters who devoured wolves whole and wore armor forged from dragon bone.
But watching Kieran dismantle the three massive rogues in twenty seconds of surgical, devastating violence, Selene saw no mindless demon.
She saw an apex predator of supreme, ancient nobility executing vermin.
Every strike of his eight-inch obsidian claws was executed with lethal, terrifying economy. When he snapped the neck of the first rogue, the casual ease with which he handled a two-hundred-pound feral beast demonstrated an order of physical power that made Alpha Derek look like a helpless child.
Kieran stood among the butchered carcasses of the rogues, his massive chest rising and falling slowly, his black fur drenched in steaming blood.
He slowly turned his towering form to face her.
Selene stared up through the blur of her delirium at the terrifying beast who commanded the nightmares of every pack from the southern valleys to the northern seas. She knew she had no strength left to fight. If this monster had come to devour her, she was ready.
"Do it..." Selene whispered, her voice barely a breath against the snow. "Kill me. It is better than returning to the pack."
Kieran did not roar. He did not bare his fangs.
Instead, the massive Lycan closed his eyes. The black fur began to ripple and recede, the bones of his massive frame shifting, cracking, and realigning with terrifying fluid speed as he shifted back into his human form.
Emerging from the shadow was a man whose sheer masculine perfection stole whatever breath Selene had left.
Standing nearly seven feet tall, with broad, powerful shoulders and a physique sculpted from living marble, Kieran Volkov looked like an ancient warrior emperor. He had pitch-black hair dusted with snow, sharp aristocratic cheekbones shadowed by dark stubble, and a severe jawline marked by a faded battle scar across his left temple.
He wore a heavy fur-lined combat coat of black wolf-pelt over dark battle armor, his bare chest exposed to the sub-zero frost without a single shiver.
Kieran dropped to both knees in the freezing snow directly before her.
He reached out his large, scarred hand, his fingers gently brushing the frozen blood from her cheek. The fury was gone from his molten gold eyes; in its place was something raw and unguarded. He had not been afraid of the rogues. He was afraid *for her*.
Kieran had not come to the Silverleaf by chance. For eleven years he had walked the northern border alone each Blood Moon, refusing every political bride the clan lords laid at his feet, listening for a thread no one else could hear. Tonight it had pulled at his chest like a hook, and he had run toward it before he understood why. Now, kneeling in the blood-soaked snow with her frozen cheek in his palm, he finally knew the scent that had called him: winter lilies and wild honey, and beneath them the faint, unmistakable fire of the royal line he had believed extinct.
He did not speak. He could not. Eleven years of waiting had ended in a torn emerald dress and a trembling girl who had asked him to kill her.
The moment his warm skin made contact with hers, a catastrophic explosion of raw, divine electricity detonated between their souls.
