Chapter 5
The Spark of Fate

The electrical shockwave that detonated through Selene’s veins was so violent, so staggering, that her entire body arched off the snow.
It was not the weak, flickering warmth she had felt with Derek Blackwood.
This was a blazing, incandescent supernova—a primal, soul-deep fire that scorched through every cell of her body, shattering the icy numbness of hypothermia in a single, devastating pulse. The comatose, broken inner wolf within her chest snapped awake, leaping to her feet with a wild, primordial roar of absolute recognition: *TRUE MATE! SOVEREIGN MATE! THE KING OF OUR SOUL!*
Selene looked into Kieran’s eyes, her violet-amber gaze widening in sheer, breathless shock.
Kieran was frozen, his hand still cupping her cheek, his molten gold eyes dilating until they were almost solid black. His breath came in heavy, ragged pants, a muscle ticking violently in his chiseled jaw as his inner beast fought for control.
The legendary Beast of Winterfell—the unyielding, merciless Lycan King who had executed three southern rebel warlords with his bare hands—was trembling.
"Moon Goddess above..." Kieran rasped, his deep baritone vibrating with an intensity of awe and possessive hunger that made the snow around them seem to melt. "It's you. My True Mate."
A Second-Chance Mate bond was exceedingly rare among wolf-kin, whispered to be a myth reserved only for royalty chosen by the Moon Mother herself. But this was no mere second chance; the ancient power thrumming between their skin was the True Sovereign Bond—a sacred, eternal union forged before the dawn of time.
Before Selene could form words through her chattering teeth, her vision swirled into darkness. The exhaustion, the blood loss, and the sheer shock of the bond overwhelmed her frail body, and she collapsed forward into his chest.
Kieran caught her effortlessly.
His massive, powerful arms slipped beneath her shivering frame, scooping her against his broad, furnace-like chest. He tore off his heavy, fur-lined combat coat, wrapping the thick, warm wolf-pelt around her tiny body like an impenetrable fortress, tucking her head against the crook of his warm, muscular neck.
The rich, intoxicating scent of cedarwood, crushed dark berries, and raw masculine power enveloped Selene completely. Even through the fog of unconsciousness, her cheek nestled instinctively against his warm throat, her cold fingers curling into the collar of his tunic.
A low, involuntary rumble—a deep, possessive purr—vibrated from Kieran’s chest as he held her against his heart.
Footsteps sounded softly through the snow, and four massive Lycan warriors in dark battle armor emerged from the pine trees, their weapons drawn.
"Sire!" the lead warrior, Commander Vane, barked in alarm, eyeing the slaughtered rogues on the ground. "We heard the roar! Are you harmed?!"
"The rogues are dead," Kieran growled, his voice carrying the lethal authority of an emperor under siege. He turned slightly, shielding Selene completely from the sight of his soldiers with his broad back. "Signal the royal sky-sled and its condor team at the northern clearing! Tell Chief Healer Olga to have the royal rejuvenation chambers preheated to forty degrees! If a single hair falls from my mate's head, heads will roll in the fortress!"
Vane’s jaw dropped in absolute, stunned shock. "Your... your mate, My King?!"
Kieran didn't bother answering. He surged to his feet, holding Selene as if she were made of spun crystal, and strode off through the waist-deep snow with relentless, thunderous speed toward the northern mountains.
As the wind howled around them, Kieran looked down at the pale, bruised face resting against his collarbone.
His eyes hardened into burning gold as his gaze locked onto the bloody tear on her throat where her silver chain had been ripped away, and the fading mark of a severed southern mate bond on her shoulder.
"Whoever did this to you will bleed until the snow turns black, my little queen," Kieran whispered into her ear, his lips brushing her cold forehead with a fierce, sacred vow. "The Bloodmoon Pack signed their own death warrant tonight."
The golden fire of the True Mate bond surged through every capillary, every nerve, and every bone in Selene’s body, chasing the deadly cold from her blood in an instantaneous, intoxicating wave.
In werewolf society, a rejected mate was considered spiritually dead—their soul severed from the divine web of the Moon Mother, doomed to wander the fringes of the world as an empty husk. But the power radiating from Kieran Volkov was not a replacement; it was the original, eternal blueprint of her destiny.
Derek Blackwood had merely been a false shadow, a shallow pretender.
Kieran Volkov was the king forged for her soul before the mountains were raised.
Kieran’s large hands gathered her closer against his furnace-like chest, his arms locking around her like bands of forged steel. He tucked her face into the warm, muscular hollow of his neck, inhaling her fragrance of sweet winter lilies, cold snow, and wild honeysuckle with starved, ravenous desperation.
"You're safe now, my fierce girl," Kieran whispered into her hair, his deep baritone vibrating through her entire torso like a soothing hymn. "No one touches you again. No one."
Behind him, Commander Vane and the three Lycan shock-troopers could only stare at their king cradling a tiny, silver-haired girl against his bare skin, their breath fogging in the arctic air, before they hurried after him with their weapons lowered.
"Commander Vane," Kieran ordered over his shoulder, his voice shifting instantly into the cold, thunderous register of an emperor. "Clear the southern border sentries. If any patrol from the Bloodmoon Pack crosses into this forest, execute them on sight and mount their heads on the boundary pillars."
"At once, My King!" Vane answered, saluting with his fist over his heart. "The sky-sled is touching down in the northern meadow!"
Kieran did not slow for his soldiers. Carrying Selene against his chest as if she weighed less than a feather, he surged through the deep snowdrifts with explosive, effortless power, leaping over fallen timber and frozen ravines with supernatural agility.
In his arms, surrounded by his heat, his scent, and the steady, thundering beat of his heart beneath her ear, Selene felt the terrifying cold of the world fade into a sweet, peaceful oblivion. For the first time in nineteen years, she was not an unwanted orphan.
She was cherished.
As the royal sky-sled, drawn by four silver-winged mountain condors, soared through the freezing blizzard toward the northern mountain peaks, Kieran held Selene wrapped tightly against his chest in the heated medical cabin.
Chief Healer Olga, a stern sixty-year-old Lycan elder with braided silver hair, was already preparing thermal saline infusions and crushed winterbloom compressions.
"Her core body temperature is thirty-one degrees, My King," Olga reported, checking Selene’s pulse. "Ten minutes more in that blizzard, and her heart would have stopped completely. But look at her cellular regeneration... it is astonishing. Her wounds are closing twice as fast as an ordinary werewolf."
Kieran’s jaw tightened, his hand gently stroking Selene’s silver-white hair, his golden eyes blazing with fierce, possessive adoration.
"She is no ordinary werewolf, Olga," Kieran murmured, his deep baritone vibrating with sacred awe. "She is the missing star of the Northern Heavens. My True Mate."
Olga froze, her hands pausing over the bandages, her eyes widening in profound reverence. "The Sovereign Mate... Moon Mother be praised. After eleven years of waiting, the Moon Goddess has answered our prayers."
Kieran leaned down, his lips pressing against Selene’s pale forehead, breathing his warm, life-giving heat into her lungs.
"Sleep, my queen," Kieran whispered into her ear. "When you wake, you will be safe in the fortress of your king. And no shadow will ever touch your world again."
