The Hostage Treaty

Dawn broke over Manhattan in heavy shades of charcoal and bruised purple.
Inside the Romano family’s historic limestone mansion on the Upper East Side, the atmosphere was suffocating with panic, grief, and simmering violence. Armed guards paced the marble corridors with automatic rifles, while dozens of capos and street soldiers gathered in the grand foyer, their voices loud and belligerent as cigarette smoke hung thick beneath the crystal chandeliers.
Upstairs in the master bedroom, Roberto Romano lay unconscious beneath an oxygen mask, hooked to private medical monitors. The family physician, Dr. Bellini, had confirmed Alessandro Viti’s chilling words: Don Roberto had ingested a massive dose of purified digitalis—foxglove toxin—slipped into his vintage Barolo at the museum gala. He was in a medically induced coma, clinging to life by a thread.
In the mahogany library on the second floor, a storm was brewing.
"The Vitis have crossed the line of blood!" Sergio Romano bellowed, slamming his fist onto the antique desk, rattling the crystal decanters. "Lorenzo Viti smiled in my brother's face while his son Alessandro poisoned Roberto's glass! We must strike back with total fury! Today, we mobilize every crew from Brooklyn to Staten Island and burn the Viti warehouses to ash!"
A chorus of angry shouts erupted from the six senior capos packed into the room.
"Silence!"
The clear, commanding voice sliced through the testosterone-fueled frenzy like a silver blade.
The capos turned. Standing in the double doorway was Isabella Romano.
She had traded her gala gown for high-waisted black trousers, a tailored ivory silk blouse, and sharp black stiletto boots. Her dark auburn hair was swept back into a sleek, elegant ponytail, and her hazel eyes burned with icy, aristocratic authority. Despite her sleepless night, she carried herself with the poise of an undisputed queen.
"No one mobilizes a single soldier," Isabella announced, walking steadily into the center of the room. Her gaze locked directly onto her uncle Sergio, noting the faint twitch at the corner of his eye and the nervous sheen of sweat along his forehead.
"Isabella, this is council business," Sergio snapped, stepping around the desk, his voice dripping with condescending impatience. "You are a grieving daughter. Go to your father's bedside and pray. Leave the war to men who understand blood."
"I am Roberto Romano’s only child and his designated legal heir," Isabella replied coldly, not yielding an inch. "And you, Uncle, are remarkably eager to start a war that will incinerate our family's fortunes."
Before Sergio could answer, the double doors of the mansion foyer downstairs banged open with concussive force.
Shouts of alarm, the frantic chambering of weapons, and the heavy thud of tactical boots echoed up the grand staircase.
"Intruders! Don't shoot! Stand down!" someone screamed from below.
Isabella and the capos rushed to the second-floor mezzanine railing.
Walking through the front entrance of the Romano mansion, flanked by only four towering bodyguards in charcoal suits, was Alessandro Viti.
He wore no mask this morning. He was dressed in an impeccably tailored three-piece charcoal suit from Savile Row, an Italian silk tie the color of crushed berries, and polished oxfords. In the daylight, his features were breathtakingly handsome, yet chiseled from cold granite. High, aristocratic cheekbones, a sharp square jaw, raven-black hair neatly styled, and those piercing, crystalline steel-blue eyes that seemed to strip away every defense in the room.
Thirty Romano soldiers had their weapons trained directly on his chest. Alessandro didn't even glance at them. He walked into the center of the foyer with slow, absolute dominance, as if he already owned the ground beneath his feet.
"Alessandro Viti," Sergio roared from the balcony, reaching for his sidearm. "You dare walk into my house after poisoning my brother?!"
Alessandro stopped by the marble fountain, looking up at the mezzanine. His icy gaze swept over Sergio with utter contempt, then shifted to Isabella. The moment his steel-blue eyes locked onto hers, the temperature in the foyer seemed to jump ten degrees. A spark of dark, possessive electricity flared between them, reminding Isabella of the burning touch of his lips on the museum terrace.
"I didn't come to speak with a traitorous dog who hires Russian mercenaries to do his butchery, Sergio," Alessandro replied, his deep baritone echoing with smooth, lethal authority through the grand hall. "I came to present the terms of the Commission."
The capos gasped. The Commission—the ruling council of the American mafia—had convened in secret during the night.
Alessandro reached into his jacket, tossing a heavy parchment document with five wax seals onto the marble table in the foyer.
"Don Roberto is incapacitated," Alessandro announced calmly. "Under syndicate law, an unresolved dispute of this magnitude requires either total warfare or a binding blood treaty. The Commission has ruled in favor of the treaty. To prevent the destruction of the Romano empire, the Viti family demands an unconditional hostage of peace."
"What hostage?!" Sergio demanded, his face purple with rage.
Alessandro raised his eyes back to Isabella, his gaze unwavering, piercing, and terrifyingly possessive.
"Isabella Romano," Alessandro stated with chilling finality. "She signs the bridal contract today. She moves into my estate in Westchester under my personal custody. In return, the Viti syndicate guarantees the safety of the Romano territory, provides 24-hour federal-grade security for Don Roberto’s hospital suite, and stays our guns."
The room erupted into total chaos. Capos shouted in outrage, weapons were raised, and Sergio’s face contorted in vicious calculation.
"Never!" Sergio shouted. "We will never surrender our princess to the Viti butcher!"
Alessandro’s eyes never left Isabella. He took two steps forward, addressing her directly, ignoring the shouting men as if they were barking dogs.
"If you refuse, Isabella, fifty of my soldiers will breach this mansion by noon," Alessandro said softly, his voice cutting through the noise with hypnotic clarity. "Your father's doctors will be compromised, your territory will be partitioned, and you will be left at the mercy of wolves who have already sold your blood. Come with me, and your father lives. Come with me, and you have my word as a Viti that your family's empire will stand."
Isabella felt the weight of fifty years of Romano history resting on her slender shoulders.
She looked at her uncle Sergio—the man who had smiled while ordering her father poisoned and her throat slit on the museum terrace. If she stayed here, Sergio would seize the throne, execute her in her sleep, and blame the Vitis.
Her only hope of keeping her father alive and uncovering the evidence to destroy Sergio was to walk straight into the lion's den.
And more than that... an intoxicating, dangerous fire had ignited in her soul the moment Alessandro Viti had touched her skin. She didn't fear the monster. She wanted to tame him.
Isabella raised her hand, silencing the shouting capos with a single, sharp gesture.
She walked down the curved marble staircase, her heels clicking with steady, deliberate rhythm against the stone. She stopped barely two feet from Alessandro, tilting her chin up to meet his towering presence.
"If I sign your contract, Alessandro," Isabella spoke, her hazel eyes blazing with defiant fire, "I do not come as your prisoner. I do not come as a trembling hostage to be locked in a gilded cage. I come as Roberto Romano’s daughter. As your equal."
A slow, devastatingly handsome smirk curved Alessandro’s sculpted lips. He looked down at her with undisguised admiration, his steel-blue eyes burning with dark, insatiable hunger.
"I would accept nothing less, little rose," Alessandro murmured, extending his large, warm hand toward her.
Isabella hesitated for half a second, then placed her slender fingers in his palm. The moment his strong fingers closed around hers, a jolt of searing, electric heat rushed through her veins, sealing her fate in blood and roses.
