In the Lion's Penthouse

The Viti estate, known throughout the underworld as *Villa del Corvo*—The Raven's Villa—was an architectural marvel perched atop the granite palisades of the Hudson River Valley in Westchester.
Surrounded by two hundred acres of dense pine forest, eight-foot wrought-iron security walls, and monitored by thermal cameras and armed patrols, the estate was an impenetrable fortress of black slate, reinforced glass, and polished mahogany. Yet inside, it was a palace of breathtaking, minimalist luxury. Soaring thirty-foot ceilings framed panoramic views of the Hudson River winding toward the Manhattan skyline, while heated Italian marble floors reflected the warm light of stone fireplaces.
Alessandro’s personal penthouse suite occupied the entire top floor of the main residence.
When the armored Maybach pulled through the security gates at dusk, Isabella was escorted upstairs not by armed guards, but by Francesca Viti, Alessandro’s twenty-year-old sister.
Francesca was slender, with the same striking raven hair as her brother, but possessing warm doe-like amber eyes and a quiet, artistic grace. She wore an oversized cashmere sweater and jeans, carrying an antique silver tray with hot espresso and freshly baked almond biscotti into the private suite.
"Don't mind Alessandro’s scowl, Isabella," Francesca said softly, offering a genuine, warm smile as she set the tray on the marble coffee table. "My brother acts like the devil incarnate because our father taught him that weakness gets you killed in this city. But he hasn't slept in three days. He personally checked every security latch on this floor before you arrived to make sure you would be safe."
Isabella took a warm porcelain cup, looking around the palatial suite in surprise. "I expected iron bars and a basement cell, Francesca. Your family and mine have been killing each other for seventy years."
Francesca’s smile softened with a hint of sorrow. "Our grandfather started that war over stolen shipping docks in Brooklyn. Alessandro hates the senseless slaughter. He agreed to take the syndicate leadership last year only to end the feud before our generation was wiped out. When he brought your contract home today, he told our council that anyone who speaks your name with disrespect will answer to his blade."
Before Isabella could absorb the weight of Francesca’s words, the heavy double doors of the suite opened.
Alessandro stepped inside, having shed his suit jacket and tie. His crisp white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the throat, the sleeves rolled up to reveal thick, corded forearms dusted with dark hair and a silver scar running along his left wrist.
Francesca excused herself with a knowing glance at Isabella, slipping quietly out of the room and closing the double doors behind her.
Alessandro stood in the center of the vast living room, his steel-blue eyes locking onto Isabella with an intensity that made the air feel suddenly thin.
"Is the suite acceptable to your standards, Isabella?" he asked, his deep baritone rumbling through the quiet room.
"It's luxurious," Isabella replied, setting her espresso cup down and folding her arms across her chest, maintaining her defiant posture. "Though I notice the terrace doors are made of bulletproof polycarbonate glass three inches thick. A gilded cage is still a cage, Alessandro."
Alessandro walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, looking out at the dark waters of the Hudson reflecting the evening stars.
"Those windows are reinforced to keep assassins out, Isabella, not to keep you in," he said calmly, turning his head to look at her. "As long as you are under this roof, you have the run of the entire estate. You can visit the equestrian stables, the Olympic pool, the gardens, the library. The only rule is that you do not leave the perimeter gates without me."
"And what happens if I try?" she challenged, stepping closer to him, her hazel eyes flashing with fiery spirit. "Will you put a bullet in my back, Capo?"
Alessandro took two slow, measured strides toward her. The sheer size of him was overwhelming. He stopped barely six inches away, his massive presence swallowing the warm light of the fireplace. The subtle scent of dark cedarwood, aged scotch, and pure masculine heat washed over her senses.
He reached out, his large, warm hand gently taking hold of her chin, tilting her face up to his. His thumb caressed the soft curve of her bottom lip with agonizing slowness.
"I would burn this entire city to ash before I let a single scratch touch your skin, little rose," Alessandro murmured, his voice dropping into that dark, velvety register that made her toes curl inside her boots. "You are here because I intend to keep you alive. And because I want you where I can see you."
Isabella’s pulse hammered against his fingertips. "Why? Because of the treaty? Because I'm a bargaining chip against my father?"
Alessandro’s thumb traced down her jawline, lingering over the rapid fluttering pulse in her throat. His steel-blue eyes flared with a raw, unshielded hunger that stole the breath from her lungs.
"There is no bargaining chip on earth worth the way my blood boils when I look at you," Alessandro growled softly. "I didn't demand you because of a treaty, Isabella. I used the treaty as an excuse to bring you into my house. Because from the moment I heard you play your violin at Lincoln Center two years ago, I knew you were the only woman in this world who could ever hold my soul."
Isabella stared at him, stunned into silence. Her heart raced with a mixture of terror and an exhilarating, breathless heat.
Alessandro dropped his hand, stepping back slightly, his lips curling into a faint, enigmatic smile.
"Come with me," he said, turning toward an arched doorway at the far end of the suite. "There is something I want to show you."
Isabella hesitated for a second, then followed him through the double doors into an adjoining private salon.
The room was stunning. Lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, a stone fireplace, and velvet armchairs, the centerpiece of the salon was a polished rosewood stand beneath a brass spotlight. Resting on the velvet cushion of the stand was a magnificent antique violin, its varnished spruce wood glowing with a warm, golden-amber patina.
Isabella gasped, her hands flying to her lips.
"An Antonio Stradivarius," she whispered in reverent awe, stepping toward the instrument as if in a dream. "The 1714 'Dolphin' model... it disappeared from an auction house in Vienna four years ago."
"My men acquired it from a private collector in Zurich," Alessandro said, leaning against the doorframe, watching her with quiet, profound warmth. "I had it restored by the master luthiers in Cremona. It has been waiting here for the only hands worthy of playing it."
Isabella turned to look at him, her hazel eyes glistening with unbidden emotion. She had expected brutality, cold demands, humiliation. Instead, this ruthless mafia prince was laying the treasures of the world at her feet, touching the deepest, most sacred part of her soul.
She picked up the instrument and the bow, resting the polished wood against her collarbone. She closed her eyes and drew the horsehair bow across the strings.
A rich, crystalline, heartbreakingly beautiful melody filled the salon—Massenet’s *Méditation* from *Thaïs*. The notes soared through the high ceiling, weeping with sorrow, longing, and an untamed passion that words could never capture.
Alessandro stood motionless in the doorway, his steel-blue eyes locked onto her as she played. For the first time in his life, the ruthless warlord looked entirely captivated, stripped of all armor, completely enslaved by the melody of the woman who held his heart.
