Chapter 4

Razor Edge Passion

Blood and Roses · Alessia DeLuca & Production Syndicate · 5 min read

By midnight, a violent autumn thunderstorm rolled across the Hudson Valley, lashing the granite walls of the villa with torrential rain and jagged streaks of lightning.

Isabella couldn't sleep. The emotional whiplash of the past forty-eight hours—her father’s poisoning, her uncle Sergio’s treachery, and the bewildering intensity of Alessandro Viti—swirled through her mind like a tempest.

Wrapped in a heavy black silk dressing robe that pooled around her ankles, she walked barefoot down the dimly lit hallway into the estate's private two-story library. The room was illuminated only by the rhythmic flashes of lightning through the two-story glass wall and the dying embers of a stone hearth.

She walked along the towering mahogany shelves, searching for a volume of Dante’s *Inferno* to distract her restless thoughts.

"Can't sleep, little rose?"

The deep, rumbling baritone emerged from the leather armchair by the fireplace.

Isabella turned, her breath catching. Alessandro was sitting in the shadows, an open leather-bound ledger on his lap, a half-empty tumbler of twenty-year-old scotch on the table beside him. He wore only black trousers and a charcoal henley shirt with the sleeves pushed up to his elbows, hugging the muscular contours of his chest and broad shoulders.

"The storm is loud," Isabella replied, stepping into the center of the library, keeping her chin raised with practiced poise. "And it's difficult to sleep when you don't know if the man who holds your life in his hands intends to execute you or seduce you."

Alessandro set the ledger on the side table and stood up.

He moved with that terrifying, predatory grace, closing the distance between them with slow, deliberate steps until he stood bare inches from her. The warmth radiating from his body seemed to push back the chill of the storm.

"If I wanted to execute you, Isabella, you wouldn't be breathing my air," Alessandro murmured, his steel-blue eyes burning down into hers in the dim firelight. "And if I wanted to seduce you... you wouldn't still be standing on your feet."

A thrill of dangerous electricity shot straight through Isabella’s veins. Instead of retreating, she stepped closer, her chest almost brushing his.

"You think you're so untouchable, don't you, Viti?" she challenged, her voice dropping into a husky, teasing whisper. "The ruthless Raven of New York. But I see right through your armor. You brought me here because you're lonely. Because beneath all those guns and guards, you're terrified that you're nothing more than a killer."

Alessandro’s jaw hardened with sudden, terrifying intensity.

Before Isabella could draw another breath, his large hand shot forward, wrapping around her slender waist with bruising strength. In one fluid, effortless motion, he spun her around and pinned her back against the solid mahogany bookshelf. Books rattled above their heads.

Isabella gasped, her hands instinctively pressing against his hard, muscular chest. His body pressed flush against hers, trapping her completely within the searing furnace of his heat. His hardness was unmistakable against the silk of her robe, heavy, rigid, and demanding.

"Be careful what you provoke, Isabella," Alessandro growled into her face, his voice rough and ragged with barely restrained desire. "You have played with fire since the moment you stepped into my foyer. You think I am a saint who will suffer in silence while you parade around my house smelling of jasmine and vanilla?"

"Then do something about it," she breathed, her hazel eyes blazing with defiance and an undeniable, intoxicating hunger. "Show me what you're made of, Alessandro."

With a low, guttural groan of pure defeat, Alessandro crushed his mouth down onto hers.

The kiss was an explosion of starved, violent passion. His mouth was hot, demanding, tasting of peaty scotch and raw, possessive hunger. His tongue swept past her parted lips, claiming her with an ancient, untamed dominance that made Isabella’s head spin.

A sharp whimper broke from her throat as she gave in completely, her hands tangling into the thick, raven waves of his hair, pulling him closer, deeper. Every ounce of caution dissolved in the inferno between them. She arched her back, grinding her hips against his, craving the solid, unyielding friction of his body.

Alessandro groaned against her lips, a sound of pure agony and ecstasy. His large, calloused hands slid beneath the lapels of her silk robe, pushing the fabric off her shoulders until it pooled at her elbows, exposing the smooth, creamy expanse of her neck and the delicate lace of her chemise.

His mouth broke from hers, trailing scorching kisses down her jawline, biting lightly at the sensitive pulse point beneath her ear before descending to her collarbone. Isabella threw her head back against the mahogany wood, her fingers digging into the corded muscles of his shoulders as waves of liquid heat cascaded between her thighs.

"Alessandro... God..." she gasped, her body trembling with overwhelming need.

His hands slid down to her hips, his fingers digging into the soft flesh of her waist, lifting her until her feet barely touched the floor. He pressed his hips firmly between her thighs, his erection rubbing against the soaked silk of her underwear with maddening, rhythmic pressure.

"Tell me this is what you want, Isabella," Alessandro panted against her skin, his steel-blue eyes blazing like molten stars. "Tell me you want me, not the treaty, not the feud. Me."

"You," she sobbed softly, framing his sculpted, stubbled face with her trembling hands. "I want you, Alessandro."

Alessandro’s breath hissed through his teeth. Every muscle in his body trembled with the effort of holding back. For one agonizing, breathtaking moment, he leaned into her, his mouth hovering bare millimeters from hers.

Then, with a shudder that shook his massive frame, he slowly eased her feet back onto the floor.

He stepped back, running both hands over his face, his chest heaving with ragged, labored breaths. He pulled her silk robe back over her trembling shoulders, his knuckles brushing her collarbone with heartbreaking tenderness.

Isabella looked at him in stunned, breathless confusion. "Alessandro... why did you stop?"

Alessandro looked down at her, his steel-blue eyes burning with a love so fierce and agonizing it stole her voice.

"Because when I take you, Isabella, it won't be against a bookshelf in the dark like a stolen secret," Alessandro whispered, his baritone thick with raw, unyielding devotion. "It will be in my bed. In the light. With your heart surrender as completely as your body. Go back to sleep, little rose. Before I lose the last shred of my sanity."

He turned on his heel and walked out of the library into the stormy night, leaving Isabella leaning against the shelves, her lips swollen, her core aching with hunger, and her soul irrevocably chained to the man she had sworn to hate.

Long after Alessandro’s footsteps had faded down the corridor, Isabella remained by the bookshelf, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped falcon. She lifted her trembling fingers to her swollen lips, tasting the faint trace of peaty scotch and his intoxicating heat. She had spent her entire life being groomed as a delicate bargaining chip—a prize to be married off to the highest bidder in the syndicate. Yet Alessandro Viti had looked past the silk and pearls, seeing the fierce, untamed fire burning in her soul. A dangerous, thrilling warmth unfurled in the deepest recesses of her heart: she was no longer a victim caught between warring empires. She was stepping into the flames with the most lethal man in New York, and for the first time in her life, she had no intention of running away.
