Chapter 1

The Midnight Tribunal

Exiled Luna, Unclaimed Queen · Lyra Sterling · 6 min read

The Great Hall of the Shadowclaw Pack had never felt so suffocating.

Beneath the soaring vaulted arches of black granite, three iron braziers burned with bitter sulfur and damp pine, filling the vast stone chamber with a choking, gray haze that stung the eyes and coated the back of Selene’s throat. Outside, a howling winter storm battered the narrow stained-glass clerestories, rattling the heavy lead frames like the frantic clawing of dying wolves.

In the center of the crimson stone floor, standing inside a circular chalk boundary drawn with salt and silver filings, stood Luna Selene Silverwood.

Her hands were bound in front of her by four links of blackened cold-iron—chains forged specifically to suppress the shift of a werewolf by burning the marrow of their wrists whenever their beast stirred. The skin around her cuffs was already raw, blistering with red welts, yet Selene held her chin level. Her silver-blonde hair, usually braided with dried mountain-lavender and silver ribbon, hung loose around her pale face, her celestial hazel eyes fixed with steady, unblinking clarity upon the high marble dais twenty paces ahead.

Upon the dais sat the Alpha Council of Shadowclaw.

Flanked by six elder warlords in heavy wolf-pelt mantles sat Alpha Kael Shadowclaw.

At twenty-eight winters, Kael was the undisputed predator of the western ridges: six-foot-four of corded muscle, broad-shouldered, his obsidian-black hair cut short against a jawline carved from harsh granite. His amber eyes—eyes that had once looked upon Selene with possessive, heated passion during their first year as mated leaders—burned now with cold, unyielding disgust.

Resting flat upon the oak planning table in front of him was an iron-bound vellum dossier.

"Read the charges once more, Elder Varek," Kael commanded. His deep, resonant baritone cut cleanly through the howling gale outside, vibrating with the terrifying dominance of a true-born Alpha.

Elder Varek, a gaunt, silver-bearded wolf whose ceremonial mantle was pinned by a heavy bronze raven skull, rose slowly from his iron chair. He lifted three sheets of yellowed parchment, his parchment-thin lips curling with malicious satisfaction.

"By decree of the High Council," Varek’s voice rasped across the silent hall, "Luna Selene Silverwood stands accused of high treason, espionage, and conspiracy to overthrow House Shadowclaw. The evidence recovered from her private study includes confidential garrison deployment rosters, defensive schematics of the eastern river bastions, and correspondence addressed to Warlord Malakor of the Blood-Wastes, bearing the personal signet seal of the Luna."

A chorus of angry, guttural murmurs erupted from the three hundred pack warriors lining the hall.

Young centurions slammed the butts of their iron spears against the flagstones, their teeth bared in primal fury. For six moons, Shadowclaw border outposts had suffered devastating ambushes, losing seventy brave warriors to sudden southern raids. The pack had demanded blood; they had demanded a scapegoat; and the council had delivered their own Luna upon an iron platter.

Beside Kael’s high chair, seated upon an elevated stool of polished cedar, sat Lady Moira.

Moira was dressed in an opulent gown of crimson velvet, trimmed with ermine fur that set off her dark auburn curls and porcelain skin. She was the daughter of the wealthiest border jarl, an ambitious noblewoman who had arrived at Shadowclaw Keep three moons ago under the pretext of refugee protection.

Now, her slender fingers rested possessively upon the carved wooden arm of Kael’s throne, her dark eyes glittering with triumphant malice as she looked down upon the bound woman in the chalk circle.

"You have heard the testimony of your council, Selene," Kael spoke again, leaning forward, resting his elbows upon the table. His jaw worked tightly, a muscle ticking beneath his scarred cheek. "The letters bear your wax seal. The ink matches the royal squid-bile reserved for the Luna's correspondence. Do you deny your treason?"

Selene took a slow, measured breath, forcing her racing heart to calm. The cold-iron burned her wrists like live embers, but the agony in her flesh was nothing compared to the icy betrayal carving through her soul.

"I deny every syllable, Kael," Selene answered, her voice clear, melodious, and steady, refusing to allow a single tremor of fear to weaken her words. "You know my hand. You know my heart. For four years, I ran your pack's grain stores, negotiated your timber treaties, and nursed your wounded hunters while you led campaigns in the crags. I never touched those letters. The seal was stolen from my writing desk during the harvest festival—stolen by the very viper whispering in your ear tonight."

Selene’s eyes shifted with lethal precision to Lady Moira.

Moira gasped softly, shrinking back with feigned, delicate vulnerability, her hand coming up to touch Kael’s forearm.

"Kael, please..." Moira whispered with trembling, theatrical tears. "She seeks to deflect her guilt onto an innocent guest. I have given everything to help your wounded warriors while she conspired to sell your throat to Malakor!"

Kael’s amber eyes flared with sudden, violent alpha dominance. The heavy oak table groaned as his fists slammed downward, fracturing the two-inch-thick wood with a sharp crack that silenced the entire hall.

"Silence!" Kael roared, rising to his full, towering height. His shadow stretched across the dais like a looming beast. "Do not dare insult this council with lies, Selene! You were an orphan adopted by the elder council, given the greatest honor a she-wolf could dream of—to stand as Luna of the greatest pack in the North! And you repay my trust by selling our borders for gold and ambition!"

Kael drew a heavy silver dagger from his belt, tossing it onto the table before him.

"The council has spoken," Kael declared, his voice devoid of mercy, devoid of memory, devoid of the love they had once shared beneath the full moon. "By sunrise, you will be stripped of your title, your bond, and your name. You will be driven into the Iron Wasteland beyond our borders. And if you ever set foot on Shadowclaw soil again, any warrior of this pack has my direct command to tear out your throat."

Along the outer stone colonnades of the hall, dozens of pack elders and seasoned trackers watched the trial in grim, uneasy silence.

Many of the older warriors remembered the brutal winter three years ago, when the eastern river had frozen solid and black-fever had decimated two entire centuries of vanguard troops. It had been Luna Selene who had ridden into the blizzard with six sleds of dried willow-bark medicine, personally boiling broth and changing dressings for forty days until the epidemic subsided.

Centurion Torin, a gray-muzzled warrior whose life Selene had saved during that very plague, took a half-step forward from the ranks, his scarred hand gripping his spear-shaft until his knuckles turned white.

"Alpha Kael," Torin spoke, his gravelly voice tight with suppressed emotion. "Luna Selene bled for this pack long before Lady Moira ever crossed our river. In all my forty winters under the moon, I have never known our Luna to tell an untruth or break an oath of House Shadowclaw. Can we not grant her a trial by the Sacred Mirror before we condemn her to the snow?"

From the dais, Elder Varek’s eyes flashed with venomous rebuke.

"Silence, Centurion!" Varek snapped, slamming his bronze staff against the floor. "Are you questioning the evidence verified by the High Council? Would you have our fallen brothers' blood go unavenged because of sentimental memories?"

Torin’s jaw tightened, but under the crushing weight of Kael’s dominant amber glare, the old warrior was forced to drop his gaze and step back into formation.

Selene looked toward Torin, offering the old warrior a faint, imperceptible nod of gratitude. She knew the courage it took for a common soldier to speak against the council.

Beside Kael, Lady Moira smoothed the rich crimson velvet of her gown, her lips curving into a subtle, mocking smirk that was hidden from Kael’s view. She had calculated every step of this coup: the forged letters, the stolen signet seal, the bribes paid to Varek’s clerk. By sunrise, the stray orphan Luna would be dead in the snow, and the seat beside Alpha Kael would be hers alone.

Selene drew a deep, icy breath into her lungs. She looked upon the pack she had served with all her heart, realizing with crystalline clarity that her time here was finished. She was standing in a den of wolves who had already sold their honor, and no amount of truth could pierce their chosen blindness.
