Chapter 2
Severing the Sacred Bond
Exiled Luna, Unclaimed Queen · Lyra Sterling · 6 min read
The silence that followed Kael’s sentence was heavy as lead, pressing down upon the Great Hall until even the crackle of the braziers seemed muted.
In wolf culture, exile was worse than a death sentence. To be cast beyond the protective border wards without a pack was to be thrown naked to the rogue scavengers, the mutated shadow-beasts, and the freezing blizzards of the Iron Wasteland. But to be severed from one’s fated mate-bond was spiritual mutilation—an agonizing tear across the soul that drove half of all rejected wolves into weeping madness within days.
Elder Varek stepped forward to the edge of the dais, holding a heavy iron bell.
"The accused will kneel to receive the formal rejection of the Alpha!" Varek proclaimed, his eyes gleaming with triumphant greed.
Selene did not move.
Her back remained ramrod straight, her silver-blonde head held high. Through the cold-iron shackles, her pulse beat with quiet, ironclad defiance. She looked past the elders, past the snarling warriors in the galleries, locking her hazel gaze directly onto the amber eyes of the man who held her heart in his callous hands.
"I will not kneel to a blind fool, Varek," Selene said, her voice cutting through the hall with razor sharpness. "And I will not kneel to an Alpha who trades his honor for a mistress's poisoned lies."
A collective gasp echoed across the galleries. No wolf had ever spoken to Alpha Kael Shadowclaw with such fearless insolence.
Kael’s face darkened with furious, wounded pride. He stepped down the marble steps of the dais, his heavy war-boots clicking rhythmically against the stone like funeral bells. He walked until he stood just outside the chalk boundary, barely three paces from her.
Up close, Selene could smell him: the familiar scent of dark spruce, ozone, and crushed cedar that had once been her sanctuary in the dark.
For four winters, that scent had meant safety, warmth, and the fierce, protective embrace of a mate who had sworn to defend her against the world. Now, beneath that scent, she detected the cloying, artificial fragrance of Moira’s spiced rosewater perfume lingering upon his collar.
The realization made something deep inside Selene calcify into diamond. The lingering hope she had carried into this hall—the desperate, foolish hope that Kael would look at her and remember who she was—withered and died in an instant.
"You are proud to the very end, Selene," Kael spoke in a low, gravelly rasp, his amber eyes searching hers for any sign of pleading, any sign of submission. "You think your defiance makes you strong? Beyond those gates, your pride will freeze in the mud."
"My pride was forged in the fire of surviving four winters at your side, Kael," Selene answered softly, her voice carrying an eerie, tranquil calm that unsettled the Alpha far more than tears ever could. "You believe you are punishing me by taking away this pack. But you are only setting me free from a man who was never worthy of my soul."
Kael flinched, as if she had struck him across the face with an iron gauntlet.
His nostrils flared, his inner wolf snarling in primal outrage at the rejection of his authority. He raised his right hand, his claws extending into three-inch talons of curved black keratin, humming with raw alpha energy.
"Then let it be done," Kael growled through clenched teeth.
He reached into his aura, seizing the invisible, ethereal thread that bound their spirits together—the sacred mate-bond woven by the Moon Mother on the night of their formal mating ceremony.
"I, Alpha Kael Shadowclaw, Alpha of the Western Ridges and Lord of the Black Pines, hereby reject you, Selene Silverwood, as my mate, my Luna, and my equal!" Kael’s voice boomed with terrifying, magical force, shaking the dust from the high ceiling beams. "I sever the bond! I cast you from my pack! I erase your name from our hearths forever!"
With a violent, downward jerk of his claws, Kael severed the ethereal thread.
A sound like the snapping of an iron bowstring resonated through the chamber.
A shockwave of blinding white agony ripped through Selene’s chest. It felt as if a jagged blade had been driven through her breastbone and twisted into her soul, tearing away four years of shared memories, shared thoughts, and shared warmth. Blood rushed to her mouth, hot and coppery, trickling past her lips down her chin. Her knees buckled under the immense, spiritual weight of the rejection.
Beside the dais, Moira let out a breathless, triumphant laugh.
Kael stood breathing heavily, expecting Selene to collapse into the dust, expecting her to sob and crawl toward his boots as rejected wolves had done since the First Age.
Instead, Selene caught herself.
Her boots dug into the flagstones. Her bound wrists snapped upward against the iron links, and with a low, primal gasp of sheer willpower, she forced her spine straight once more.
She swallowed the blood in her mouth, looked Kael dead in the eye, and wiped the crimson stain from her chin with the back of her cold-iron cuffs.
"The bond... is severed," Selene whispered, her hazel eyes flaring for a fraction of a second with a strange, incandescent flash of silver-violet light that made Kael’s breath catch in his throat.
"Now take off your collar, Alpha. And let me walk."
Inside Kael's chest, a violent, chaotic war was tearing through his inner beast.
The moment his claws severed the ethereal thread of their mate-bond, a deep, agonized howl erupted within his spiritual core. His wolf thrashed violently against his ribs, clawing at his mind, screaming in desperate, instinctual fury that he had just committed an unforgivable sacrilege against the Moon Mother.
A wave of dizzying nausea hit Kael like a physical blow. His vision blurred for two seconds, his heart skipping three rapid beats as the warm, golden connection that had anchored his soul for four years withered into absolute, icy nothingness.
He had expected to feel vindication; he had expected to feel the fierce, righteous triumph of an Alpha purging treason from his den.
Instead, a gaping, cavernous void opened inside his chest—a cold, hollow pit that left him feeling strangely hollowed out, as if part of his own life-force had been ripped from his flesh.
He stared at Selene, expecting her to collapse, expecting her to weep and plead as rejected mates always did.
Instead, the woman standing before him looked upon him with eyes so calm, so devoid of fear, that an unnatural chill settled deep into Kael's spine.
There was no hatred in her hazel gaze; there was no sorrow. There was only the vast, unfathomable stillness of an immortal mountain looking down upon a fleeting storm.
Around the perimeter of the hall, the younger wolves looked at each other in uneasy bewilderment.
The severance of a True Mate bond was supposed to shatter the weaker party, breaking their spirit and reducing them to helpless weeping. Yet Luna Selene stood taller, prouder, and more untouchable than she ever had while wearing the Luna collar.
Moira stepped closer to Kael, noticing the sudden pallor of his skin and the slight tremor in his mailed hand. She wrapped her fingers around his arm, pressing her soft body against him, whispering in a low, seductive purr:
"It is done, my Alpha. The poison has been cut from your house. You are free now."
Kael did not look at Moira. He could not tear his eyes away from Selene's unbroken gaze. For the first time in his life, Alpha Kael Shadowclaw wondered if the evidence he had trusted so blindly was a trap that would cost him his very soul.
