Chapter 4

Walk into the Iron Wasteland

Exiled Luna, Unclaimed Queen · Lyra Sterling · 5 min read

The outer courtyard of Shadowclaw Keep was a churning vortex of white ice and howling wind.

The blizzard had deepened since midnight, piling four-foot drifts of crusty snow against the granite battlements. The cold was brutal, dropping twenty degrees below freezing, biting through Selene’s thin linen tunic like thousands of microscopic glass needles.

At the western gatehouse, two guards stripped off her sheepskin cloak and leather traveling boots, leaving her barefoot in the freezing gravel.

They knocked the cold-iron shackles from her wrists with a heavy hammer, tossing the chains into the snow. The sudden release of the iron brought a sharp, throbbing rush of circulation back into her bruised hands, but without the suppression of the iron, the cold attacked her nervous system with savage speed.

The massive oak-and-iron portcullis creaked upward three feet.

"Move, exile," the gate sergeant grumbled, looking away from her eyes, unable to meet the gaze of the Luna who had saved his young son from scarlet fever the previous winter. "Beyond the iron marker stone, you are dead to this pack."

Selene did not answer.

She stepped through the narrow opening, her bare feet pressing into the frozen, jagged gravel. Every step was an agony of sharp rock and freezing ice, but she did not slow her pace. She walked across the wooden drawbridge, spanning the eighty-foot chasm of the Black Gorge, and stepped onto the frozen dirt track that led into the Iron Wasteland.

Ten paces past the bridge stood the boundary marker: an eight-foot pillar of black iron carved with the snarling wolf of House Shadowclaw.

Beyond that stone lay forty leagues of jagged volcanic ridges, frozen cedar bogs, and toxic sulfur vents—a desolate, lawless wilderness where no pack claimed dominion, known only as the graveyard of exiles.

Selene paused at the marker stone.

She turned and looked back one last time at the towering granite fortress of Shadowclaw Keep. The high towers rose like dark monoliths against the storm, their torchlights flickering like distant, uncaring stars. For four years, she had given her youth, her intellect, and her devotion to those walls. She had arrived as a lonely orphan; she had left as a condemned traitor.

A bitter, quiet smile touched her numb lips.

"You took my name, Kael," Selene whispered into the howling wind, her breath freezing into white plumes of vapor. "You took my title. But you did not break my soul. And when I return... you will bow to the woman you threw to the wolves."

She turned her back on the fortress, stepping into the deep snow of the wilderness.

For three hours, Selene marched westward into the teeth of the blizzard.

Her bare feet quickly lost all sensation, turning from red to a terrifying, waxy white. Her linen tunic was soaked through with sleet, clinging to her shivering frame like a shroud of ice. Her wolf—suppressed for hours by the cold-iron shackles—stirred weakly within her chest, whimpering in exhaustion, its body temperature dropping to dangerous thresholds.

Hypothermia was a patient predator.

First came the violent shivering, teeth chattering so hard that her gums bled; then came the insidious numbness, the heaviness in her limbs, and the quiet, seductive temptation to lie down in the soft white drifts and simply close her eyes.

"No," Selene gritted her teeth, forcing one frozen foot in front of the other through a knee-deep snowdrift. "Not here. Not like this. I will not die to make Moira smile."

She stumbled over a buried tree root, crashing heavily onto the frozen crust.

The wind tore through the pine needles above, drowning out the sound of the world.

And then, carried on the icy gale from behind her, Selene’s keen ears caught a sound that froze the blood in her veins:

The rhythmic, stealthy crunch of four heavy paws moving swiftly across the snow behind her.

Moira had not been content with exile. The hunters were here.

The Iron Wasteland stretched before her like an endless ocean of jagged black crags and frozen volcanic glass.

In the lore of the northern packs, the wasteland was a cursed territory created a thousand winters ago when an ancient battle of dark sorcery had pulverized the mountains into sharp gravel and poisoned the subterranean springs with sulfur and quicksilver. No wolf pack had ever established a permanent settlement in these wastes; only desperate rogues, feral outcasts, and mutated monstrosities roamed the treacherous ravines.

Selene trudged through the knee-deep drifts, her bare feet leaving small, crimson tracks in the pristine white snow where sharp obsidian shards cut into her frozen soles.

She could no longer feel the pain in her feet; the nerves had been deadened by the biting frost forty minutes ago. Her mind, however, remained sharp, cold, and relentlessly calculating.

She remembered the ancient survival treatises she had studied in the private archives of the Shadowclaw library during her early months as Luna.

She remembered that three leagues west of the border marker lay the Gorge of the Whispering Bones: a deep limestone fissure where geothermal steam vented from the earth, providing shelter from the freezing winds.

"If I can reach the gorge before midnight," Selene murmured aloud, her voice barely a whisper against the howling gale, "the geothermal heat will keep my core temperature above the threshold. I can survive until dawn."

She pulled the torn linen tunic tighter across her chest, pressing her forearms against her ribs to conserve every fraction of body heat.

Every breath she drew felt like inhaling crushed glass, burning her lungs and chilling the blood in her throat. Her vision began to tunnel, the edges of the snowy landscape blurring into shifting gray shadows as exhaustion dragged at her limbs like heavy iron weights.

She stumbled once, twice, catching herself against the frozen trunk of a dead pine tree.

Her fingernails tore against the brittle bark, but she refused to stop. She pushed off the tree, forcing her legs to move, driven forward by an unyielding, unbreakable willpower that defied the mortal limits of her flesh.

And that was when the crunch of hunting paws behind her shattered the howling silence of the storm.

The darkness deepened as the storm reached its peak, wrapping the jagged volcanic spires in howling fury. Selene pressed forward through the blinding drifts, her breath coming in ragged, freezing gasps. Every muscle in her body screamed for rest, but her spirit burned with unshakeable resolve. She was no longer bound to a pack that had betrayed her; she was free, walking into the wild to claim a destiny that no Alpha could ever tear from her soul.

Step by step, she carved her path through the frozen labyrinth of black stone. The cold bit into her bones, but deep within her blood, an ancient, dormant spark of silver flame flickered in quiet defiance against the elements. She knew that beyond this frozen wasteland lay a world untouched by the corruption of Shadowclaw Keep. With every ounce of strength remaining in her exhausted body, she pushed forward into the storm, determined to survive.

Her destiny was not to die in the shadows, but to rise as the true queen she was born to be.
