Chapter 5
Pursuit in the Blood-Thickets
Exiled Luna, Unclaimed Queen · Lyra Sterling · 5 min read
The predators were five paces behind her when Selene scrambled to her feet.
Through the blinding curtain of swirling snow, three massive wolves emerged from the shadow of the frosted pines. They were not the sleek, disciplined warriors of the Shadowclaw patrol, but scarred, mangy brutes with yellow fangs and jagged notches cut into their ears: rogue mercenaries hired from the lawless border taverns.
In the center stood a scarred, rust-colored wolf whose left eye was milky and blind.
He did not shift into human form; he did not need to. The bloodlust radiating from his predatory aura was transparently clear. Lady Moira had paid them in gold to ensure that the exiled Luna never made it past the first ridge.
"Back!" Selene gasped, raising her arms, her hands curving into claws as she attempted to summon her shift.
Her wolf answered with a desperate, shuddering howl in her soul, but her body was too depleted by hypothermia and cold-iron poisoning. Her muscles seized in agonizing cramps; fur rippled along her forearms for a fraction of a second, only to recede as her body temperature plummeted further.
The two flanking wolves chuckled—a guttural, wet sound in their throats—and lunged simultaneously.
Selene reacted with the battle instincts drilled into her by years of watching Alpha war councils.
She ducked beneath the lead wolf’s jaws, scooped a handful of frozen gravel from an exposed ditch, and hurled it directly into the milky eye of the rust-colored brute. The rogue shrieked in pain, shaking his head violently as the sharp stones bit into his scarred flesh.
Without breaking stride, Selene grabbed a heavy, broken pine branch from the snow, driving the jagged, splintered end straight into the throat of the second wolf who lunged from her left.
The beast yelped in agony, collapsing into the drift as black blood stained the white powder.
But the third wolf—a massive, black-furred brute twice her weight—slammed his armored shoulder into her ribs with bone-cracking momentum.
Selene was thrown five yards through the air, crashing violently through a dense thicket of thorned blood-briers.
The razor-sharp thorns tore through her linen tunic, slicing deep gashes across her arms, shoulders, and thighs. She rolled to the edge of a steep ravine, coughing blood, her vision swimming in dark gray shadows.
The rust-colored leader, his good eye burning with psychotic rage, walked slowly toward the edge of the brier patch.
His lips curled back over dripping fangs, preparing for the final, throat-tearing leap.
"End of the road, little Luna," the rogue's telepathic sneer echoed through the clearing.
Selene lay in the snow, her body broken, her lungs burning. She looked up at the black sky through the pine branches, feeling the cold kiss of death settling over her limbs.
Is this how it ends? she thought, a tear freezing upon her cheek. Cast out in the dark, murdered by cowards in the snow?
No.
Deep within the core of her being—in a place untouched by Kael’s rejection, untouched by cold-iron, untouched by the mortal blood of her ancestors—something ancient, primordial, and untamed awakened.
It was not the gray wolf of the northern packs.
It was a roaring vortex of pure, silver-violet fire that erupted from the center of her chest like an exploding star.
A blinding, celestial light burst outward from Selene’s skin.
The blood-briers around her withered and burned to white ash in a microsecond. The three rogue wolves stopped dead in their tracks, their fur standing on end, their eyes wide with sheer, paralyzing terror as a wave of divine sovereign dominance crashed down upon them like a collapsing mountain.
Upon Selene’s right palm, the dormant birthmark she had carried since birth—a faint silver crescent moon—flared into blazing, incandescent brilliance.
A resonant, celestial roar—louder than any wolf, more majestic than any Alpha—echoed from her throat, shaking the snow from the trees for half a league.
Before the rogues could comprehend what they were facing, the air behind them turned frigid as winter midnight.
A shadow—swift, silent, and lethal as an executioner's scythe—dropped from the high pine canopy into the center of the clearing.
A six-foot-four warrior in dark dragon-scale armor, wielded a curved silver crescent blade that flashed in the starlight with terrifying speed.
In two fluid, effortless strokes, the rust-colored rogue and the black brute were cleaved in two, their lifeless bodies hitting the snow before their severed heads could even fall.
The warrior sheathed his blade with a crisp, metallic click.
He walked slowly toward the brier patch, his heavy boots crunching softly in the snow. He knelt in the drift beside Selene, his dark, scarred face illuminated by the dying embers of her silver-violet light.
His sapphire eyes—deep, ancient, and filled with profound, reverent awe—looked into her fading hazel eyes.
"The Silver Queen has awakened," the warrior whispered, his deep baritone trembling with reverence.
He reached down with gentle, powerful arms, lifting Selene from the frozen snow against his warm armored chest, drawing his heavy wolf-fur mantle around her shivering form.
Selene looked into his face, feeling the intense warmth of his body driving away the cold, before darkness claimed her consciousness.
The dark warrior who held Selene in his arms stood like a solitary colossus amidst the raging blizzard.
His name was Warlord Lucian of the Silver Sanctum: the legendary commander of the Free Wolf Enclave, whose name had been spoken with fearful reverence by the council elders of the northern packs for a decade.
Lucian looked down at the battered, shivering woman cradled against his chest.
Her lips were blue from the cold; her bare feet were lacerated by obsidian gravel; and her linen tunic was soaked in crimson blood from the thorned blood-briers. Yet upon her forehead, and pulsing in the center of her right palm, the faint, silver-violet crescent moon still radiated a gentle, divine warmth that drove away the freezing chill of the storm.
Lucian touched the soft skin of her temple with his gloved thumb, feeling the terrifying, magnificent resonance of the ancient royal bloodline singing in her veins.
"Four hundred winters we have waited in the shadows," Lucian murmured, his deep baritone rich with profound, reverent emotion. "Four hundred winters our people prayed for the true heir of the Silver Throne to awaken. And here you are... bleeding in the snow of your own ex-mate's cruelty."
From the shadows of the surrounding pine forest, four heavily armored scouts of the Silver Sanctum emerged, their white winter mantles blending seamlessly with the falling snow.
The lead scout—a silver-haired female tracker named Lyra—knelt in the drift before Lucian, her sharp eyes inspecting the severed corpses of the two rogue mercenaries.
"The rogues bore the signet tokens of House Shadowclaw, Warlord," Lyra reported, her voice laced with disgust. "Alpha Kael's mistress hired them to butcher her in the briars."
Lucian's sapphire eyes flashed with cold, lethal fury that could have frozen fire.
"Kael Shadowclaw is an arrogant fool who traded the sun for a flickering candle," Lucian said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, quiet rumble. "Bring the heated sled. Prepare the elixirs of celestial warmth. We ride for the Silver Sanctum immediately."
"And if Shadowclaw patrols cross the border, Warlord?" Lyra asked, her hand resting on the hilt of her dual crescent daggers.
Lucian pulled his heavy wolf-fur mantle securely around Selene’s unconscious form, sheltering her from the howling blizzard.
"If they cross the border," Lucian answered, leaping into the saddle of his massive shadow-stallion, "show them what happens when you hunt the true Queen of the North."
